I like these sometimes on features but I still think it would bother me to see anything on the display when I am not using it. I don't know if I can ever get use to having the screen on. Seems like a waste of power.

That is potentially the beauty of this feature though. If Apple has done a good job it can be different things to different people. An AOD will drain some power yet Apple claims the same or even slightly better battery life with this year's Pro/Pro-Max vs last year so presumably has made some efficiency savings elsewhere to offset the extra AOD power drain. That means that people who value an AOD can have one and still get 13 Pro/ProMax like battery life and people like me (and perhaps you) can turn it off and get even better battery life than we got last year. Because of this I welcome the AOD even though it is the first thing that I will turn off on my phone (well, maybe the second; I also turn off 5G for very much the same reason because I don't need it).

Apple today published a new support document with additional details about the new always-on display mode on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Notably, the document lists eight scenarios where the always-on display temporarily turns off.

To save battery life, Apple says the display goes completely dark when:
  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (see paragraph below)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch
According to Apple, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max can learn your "activity patterns" and turns the always-on display off and on accordingly. For example, Apple says the display can work in tandem with a user's alarm or sleep schedule if they have one set.

Always-on display mode is enabled by default. To turn it off, open the Settings app, tap on the Display & Brightness menu, and turn off Always On.

iPhone 14 Pro models can drop down to a refresh rate as low as 1Hz to ensure that the always-on display does not have too significant of an impact on battery life. Apple says the always-on display uses multiple coprocessors in the A16 Bionic chip to refresh the display using "minimal power," making the display "incredibly power efficient."

Always-on display mode dims the entire Lock Screen, but still shows information like the time, widgets, and wallpaper. Once you raise the iPhone, tap the screen, or press the side button, the display returns to normal brightness. You can also swipe up from the bottom of the display and authenticate with Face ID to wake the iPhone as usual.

What's really interesting is this one on the list
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
'cause we saw others showing that Maps was still show directions on the lock screen when in CarPlay. It does show the full map (that's obviously on your car's display) but it shows the next turn, etc in the written directions. I wonder if this changes in 16.0.1 or 16.1 or if its related to wired carplay vs wireless carplay, etc.

You can turn this off. It's in the filters for the Sleep Focus. Focuses are highly customizable. I'm really impressed at how far it's come in just 2 gens.

I didn't mess with focus filters until this week. I'm really learning a lot and looking forward to getting them all set up just how I want them. I like the idea of having a different "screen" for each focus throughout the day.

How long is "a while"? I mean seriously Apple, how hard is it to just tell people that "the iPhone AoD will turn off after x minutes of you are not using your iPhone." What's so difficult in simply saying a number instead of "a while."
I imagine because it's not a specific x minutes, but takes into other factors that affect that number of minutes/hours. As well as based on analytics they may over time change how this is.

My only problem with Focus now is that I don’t want to constantly see the icon taking up the notification space on the Watch.

I guess it won't turn off if I lay the phone down on the charger at night... I'll have to set up a sleep focus which I've never felt the need to do before.

So there isn't a way to ALWAYS have the display on? For instance, I woke up in the middle of the might last night and the display was turned off. I like to be able to see the time if I wake up in the middle of the night like I did with my android. I didn't see anything in the settings to enable this.

That's my same issue I have with my 14 Pro Max. Only reason I upgraded from my 13 PM was to have this feature where I could see the time when I'd randomly wake up in the middle of the night. But apparently that won't be the case for me neither.

So Apple's "always on display" isn't always on. This is probably the first time I am truly disappointed in Apple for advertising something that clearly isn't true. They could have mentioned this one little tid bit when they were boasting about this feature on the announcement. Oh well, back the phone goes to Apple.

I do not see a filter within the Sleep Focus for enabling the AOD to remain on. Maybe I’m missing it.

I’m annoyed with the AOD so far. I wanted to be able to glance at my phone during the night for the time while it’s on its stand and not have ti touch the screen. It turns off after an hour and I’m guessing it’s because I have an alarm set? What a crock of poop we all have alarms set.

That’s the only thing I can think of. Supposedly it will learn it? But I doubt it. I have an always on display that isn’t always on. Yay.

According to the article it turns off when sleep focus is on.

I guess this means it won't serve as a bedside clock overnight when on a charger stand? I was kind of hoping for that!
The AOD turned off when I put it on my wireless charger, so I suspect not.

I'm gonna give it a few days to a week to see if it actually "learns" my patterns. Sounds like apple BS marketing fluff to me though lol. But damn I do still like this phone a lot. I'm certainly not going to return it because of a half ass AOD but it is very disappointing.
