I like these sometimes on features but I still think it would bother me to see anything on the display when I am not using it. I don't know if I can ever get use to having the screen on. Seems like a waste of power.
That is potentially the beauty of this feature though. If Apple has done a good job it can be different things to different people. An AOD will drain some power yet Apple claims the same or even slightly better battery life with this year's Pro/Pro-Max vs last year so presumably has made some efficiency savings elsewhere to offset the extra AOD power drain. That means that people who value an AOD can have one and still get 13 Pro/ProMax like battery life and people like me (and perhaps you) can turn it off and get even better battery life than we got last year. Because of this I welcome the AOD even though it is the first thing that I will turn off on my phone (well, maybe the second; I also turn off 5G for very much the same reason because I don't need it).I like these sometimes on features but I still think it would bother me to see anything on the display when I am not using it. What's really interesting is this one on the list
Apple today published a new support document with additional details about the new always-on display mode on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Notably, the document lists eight scenarios where the always-on display temporarily turns off.

To save battery life, Apple says the display goes completely dark when:
According to Apple, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max can learn your "activity patterns" and turns the always-on display off and on accordingly. For example, Apple says the display can work in tandem with a user's alarm or sleep schedule if they have one set.
- Your iPhone is lying face down
- Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
- Sleep Focus is on
- Low Power Mode is on
- Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
- You're using Continuity Camera
- You haven't used your iPhone for a while (see paragraph below)
- Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch
Always-on display mode is enabled by default. To turn it off, open the Settings app, tap on the Display & Brightness menu, and turn off Always On.
iPhone 14 Pro models can drop down to a refresh rate as low as 1Hz to ensure that the always-on display does not have too significant of an impact on battery life. Apple says the always-on display uses multiple coprocessors in the A16 Bionic chip to refresh the display using "minimal power," making the display "incredibly power efficient."
Always-on display mode dims the entire Lock Screen, but still shows information like the time, widgets, and wallpaper. Once you raise the iPhone, tap the screen, or press the side button, the display returns to normal brightness. You can also swipe up from the bottom of the display and authenticate with Face ID to wake the iPhone as usual.

You can turn this off. It's in the filters for the Sleep Focus. Focuses are highly customizable. I'm really impressed at how far it's come in just 2 gens.
I imagine because it's not a specific x minutes, but takes into other factors that affect that number of minutes/hours. As well as based on analytics they may over time change how this is.How long is "a while"? I mean seriously Apple, how hard is it to just tell people that "the iPhone AoD will turn off after x minutes of you are not using your iPhone." What's so difficult in simply saying a number instead of "a while."

So there isn't a way to ALWAYS have the display on? For instance, I woke up in the middle of the might last night and the display was turned off. I like to be able to see the time if I wake up in the middle of the night like I did with my android. I didn't see anything in the settings to enable this.
I do not see a filter within the Sleep Focus for enabling the AOD to remain on. Maybe I’m missing it.You can turn this off. It's in the filters for the Sleep Focus. Focuses are highly customizable. I'm really impressed at how far it's come in just 2 gens.
Well I mean…..always on is supposed to mean always on lol. Ima start it!So.... it's not Always-On then.
Waiting for someone to file a class action lawsuit against Apple for false marketing.
The AOD turned off when I put it on my wireless charger, so I suspect not.According to the article it turns off when sleep focus is on.
I guess this means it won't serve as a bedside clock overnight when on a charger stand? I was kind of hoping for that!
It turns off. At least mine did.I guess it won't turn off if I lay the phone down on the charger at night... I'll have to set up a sleep focus which I've never felt the need to do before.
