In celebration of the Japanese New Year, Apple will be holding a promotion that offers customers in Japan a free Apple gift card worth up to ¥30,000 with the purchase of an eligible Apple product from January 2 through January 5.

Gift card values range from ¥4,000 for products like the iPhone SE and third-generation AirPods to ¥30,000 for the 15-inch MacBook Air.

In addition to a gift card, the first 50,000 customers in Japan who purchase a new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 13, or third-generation iPhone SE from Apple during the promotion will receive a limited-edition AirTag with a "Year of the Dragon" engraving.

Apple has shared terms and conditions for the promotion with additional details. Notably, iPhone orders placed through the Apple Store app will not qualify for a limited-edition AirTag, so make sure to complete your purchase on Apple's website or at a physical Apple Store in Japan if you are interested in receiving one.

Apple holds a Japanese New Year promotion on an annual basis, and this is the third consecutive year it has offered a special AirTag.

Why does Japan get all the cool exclusive tech stuff?
Almost all shops here put together lucky bags at new year. Apple used to actually do pretty great lucky bags, but moved onto more standard gift card and this AirTag. It’s cool, but not what the lucky bags used to be.

Wait... you only get this limited edition engraved AirTag by purchasing a last-gen iPhone? Is this, like, some kind of trick to use a shiny bauble as a lure to offload older inventory?

the standard emoji which can be engraved on many different products free of charge if bought from the Japanese apple web store throughout the year, and this one which is for New Years / Year of the Dragon, is different.

the general face of the dragon is very similar to one of the available dragon designs, but this one which is for New Years / Year of the Dragon only also has the dragon holding an Air Tag in its talons.

The purchase also includes an 11,000 yen Apple Gift Card. So, it's more than just an AirTag.

No one has explained yet why Japan gets this stuff and the rest of the world doesn't. these things would be really popular in the US too.

The AirTag emoticons in Japan & China/HK are cool as they've had it for awhile. Apple needs to make them available outside of Asia including Chinese/Japanese characters for personalization.
I live in Japan. MacRumors needs to make its freebie promotions open to people in Japan. In return for which…

Which is $77 USD. So... they are just really desperate to offload some older inventory?
It’s the time of the year products that companies released in Japan. I would never buy it out right and yeah you can buy these without buying a phone. But why would I spend so much for the AirTag that I could More likely create something over myself
