They could make it so it senses a vehicle in motion even if it's not connected and disables the phone. They could easily make it so you can't disable it. If the customers don't like it they can go get an Android phone. It would make Apple a leader in safety.
The article says passengers can disable theirs. So the driver probably easily could too. Just saying if the thought of you killing yourself or others or an often costly ticket in most states doesn't deter you a feature that can be bypassed won't stop you.

Why doesn't the iphone just mimic what is on a carplay head unit when it detects you are driving? There is no way I'm dishing out the money for a car play head unit when the phone itself could easily do the same thing.

Has to say something about where we are that this is now a feature. It's really not hard to keep your phone down

I don't think the "do not disturb" part is the killer feature (duh, you can always turn your phone off or just use Do Not Disturb when you get in the car, today). The "urgent" break-through is critical.

This allows me to ignore the 90% of notifications and chatter that happens while I am driving home, and know that if a message pops up, I need to pull over and read it. For instance, I have missed notifications about needing to pick a kid up from an event while I'm driving home, which I don't look at because I assumed it was just more random chatter.

It does sense a vehicle in motion (watch the video...) regardless of being connected to the bluetooth radio. But you have to be able to disable it because sometimes, rarely, there is someone in a vehicle who is not the driver.

Does anyone else feel like they missed the main concern of how DND/WD will affect people who use their phone for navigation, using Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze? what about selecting music?

DND is about notifications. You will still be able to use your phone for music, navigation, podcasts, etc. You just won't get the "new notification" bing and slide-down notification each time someone comments on your facebook or twitter or texts you etc.

Basically, it is the Do Not Disturb feature which currently exists, plus:

* Automatically triggered (although able to be disabled) by connecting to a car radio OR traveling at motor vehicle speeds (i seems like there was a third trigger, but I don't recall it).
* Automatic Message replies
* Ability for "VIP" contacts to optionally break through the DND by specifying "urgent" in a subsequent message

The open question is if there is still the "VIP" which "always" breaks through, or if all contacts you mark as being able to break through still need to positively assert urgency (which IMHO is a problem with the current DND implementation).

Overall, this is a great improvement for those of us who use our phones in the car (for music, navigation, etc) and occasionally need to be able to get emergency messages by the same device.

If this can't be turned off, it could be deal breaker for me..lol I'd switch to android in a heartbeat. I don't really appreciate Siri trying to be a helper or Apple for that matter.

I thought Craig was about to introduce a CarPlay UI directly on iPhone for those driving cars without CarPlay. Would be great to see the simplified CarPlay on my iPhone when I rent a car.

It might take a long time to be fully implemented, but possibly there would a way for the phone to tell it's in a passenger vehicle so you could still use it other places. It'll probably take forced Government regulation to come up with something that will force disable a phone for a motor vehicle operator.
Gotta agree. Anything to curb deaths is welcomed by me.

If only this feature was forced...
Then my passengers would get really upset. They like to surf Facebook while I'm driving.

And how will it know if you're driving or a passenger?

And make sure it will always guess right without forcing you to modify your car.

It gives you an option to enable it or not. And even if its enabled there's still a way to bypass/disable it.

So the phone will provide an auto-reply that will alert anyone who texts you that you're probably driving?
That is one of the things it can do.

So I have Apple Carplay and voice integration, so I can receive calls and receive and reply to text messages using voice whilst driving, whilst my phone is safely stowed away in the center console bin.

Can this DNDWD feature be turned off permanently (until manually toggled back on), or do I have to remember to turn it off every single time I get into my car?

I hope there is an option "I NEVER drive a car". I don't want my phone to bug me with this _for me_ unneeded stuff...
Do you drive a car?

I'm fairly certain CarPlay will trigger DNDWD automatically.

Disabling it by indicating that you're the passenger should require granting access to the rear camera. If it sees the steering wheel, it won't allow you to turn off DND. If the AR they demoed could identify a table, surely it could tell if you're driving.

Why do you yearn to be ruled by your technology rather than to be in charge yourself?

Every time I see this attitude it scares me.

I think the basic "why not" reason is the size of even the largest iPhone screen, which is significantly smaller than the display on a Car Play "head unit." It's the difference between very large, easy to tap icons (head unit) and icons that would barely be larger than those on the regular iPhone display.

Oh well, no upgrading to iOS11 for me until a jailbreak comes out and a tweak to disable that, then. :) It would be the first time i've jailbroken since iOS7
