I expected Cityscapes: Sim Builder from Apple Arcade to be on the list since it is a superior game to EA's Sim City. I hope the developers win the 2024 award.

I don't see any mention of the criteria they used to compile these lists. Income, downloads, actual hours used, who knows. And being on Apple Arcade in a special category makes it even more confusing. It's probably just based on downloads and not user satisfaction or play time or anything more significant.

The ChatGPT app only launched in May. Perhaps if it had been available for the full year, it would've made the list. The app is currently #3 in the "Top Free Apps" category and #1 in the "Productivity" category in the App Store.

They also don't say when the list was compiled or how long an app had to be on it to count. Seems to have been deliberately omitted. The whole list is meaningless really. As I said above, free/paid doesn't mean anything anymore. Every single one of the top apps by income is "free."

I'm surprised Shadowrocket is one of the top paid iPhone and iPad apps. I've never heard of it before, nor have I seen it mentioned in most of the news sources I follow. I might have been living under a rock all this time!
Used by users in China and other authoritarian countries to bypass government-level network censorship.

Mainly Chinese users download it from the U.S. App Store, because Apple removed almost all VPN apps from the Chinese App Store at the request of the CCP.

I hear a lot of people using it for coding and similar, which I suppose makes sense, and I use it for macros. Other than that, though, what's the use case for someone like me? I'm not a coder, have no interest in coding, and don't work in IT.

To do your reading and writing for you. Just ask it any question you have about anything, any problem you want to solve. See what it says. Whatever your field, try having it write common templates if you ever have to communicate with anyone about anything. It may not be right but it's usually interesting or a good start.

Probably why it was under the radar. Maybe not for long now...

Maybe you are right. The CCP requires all apps on the Chinese App Store to obtain government-approved licenses starting next year.

It may go further in the future, so iPhones sold in China are only allowed to use the Chinese App Store.

Thank you, this is what I'm saying. If Apple actually acted on the things they say about the App Store they would be right and no one would want "sideloading." The problem is that they are full of ****, and billions of people have installed software without their permission before the App Store even existed, so we know we can do it again if they don't do a good job.
you think because some apps are scams people want sideloading? Or more directly - you think side loading will decrease scam apps? The opposite seems far more likely.

If Temu is trying to maximize their profits, they're not doing a very good job of it.

But yes, I agree with you that Temu is bad, and not just for their suppliers/manufacturers. They're also bad for the environment as they sell a lot of junk that doesn't last.

The same goes for Shein.

According to Wired, Temu loses about $30 per order because the company is trying to dominate the U.S. market by offering lower-than-low prices. Temu loses between $588 and $954 million a year because of its cost-cutting practices, according to finance company China Merchants Securities.

Additionally, Temu pressures its manufacturers to lower their prices even further to appease discount-seeking customers, leaving those manufacturers with little to no profit in return. Wired reported that Temu bears most of the company's international shipping costs, but relies on American consumers to frequently order from Temu to make up for money lost.

This isn't even factoring in the borderline false advertising and the other stuff consumer watchdogs dug up

The fact it's still #1 on the app store even after all that is really depressing, and highlights the core problem of the Apple App Store: Apple highlights whatever app makes them the most money even if it's a blatant scam, and app discoverability be damned. There are so many good paid apps available on iOS that hardly anyone knows about because Apple would rather push free apps with in app purchases since they net them more money than one time purchases.

This is exactly why we need sideloading, because god knows Apple ain't gonna deliver us a good app distribution service, so might as well bring in someone who can. (Just not Epic Games lmao)

I just think Apple is not living up to their own marketing about the App Store and it’s creating a desire for an alternative.

You may call it a problem for the Apple App Store, but I call it a problem for our society. As in, our society is driving the problem.

The mantra of lower-at-all-costs is a denial of why things cost, of why labor and invention have value.

Apple should base this on NEW downloads not re-occuring update downloads. There is no change for any apps to beat Whatsapp or TikTok. They will forever be in the top 10 spotlight

I really wish companies would stop with the “popular” posts without at least some kind of demographic information. Are these apps and games most popular with people who understand the meaning of loyalty, respect and kindness towards people, or are these apps and games most popular with people who would mistreat you for a dollar? What is right isn’t always popular, and what is popular isn’t always right. For all we know these “popular” lists are nothing more than ‘power of suggestion cash grabs’ and we won’t know that without more information.

No this is purely Apple. Apple controls the storefront on the OS that is designed that the only way to get software on your thousand dollar phone is to go through them and them alone. Temu rose up in popularity due to false advertising on Youtube, then it resulted in a feedback loop with it now constantly being promoted on the front page of the App Store by Apple themselves, which in turn will trick people into thinking Temu is legit. After all they have to be, Apple is promoting them on the front page, and we can trust Apple...right?

It's time Apple starts being held accountable. They control the sole marketplace of the platform, and they chose to let the scam fester since it's making them a lot of money, just like with all the other shovelware, bootlegs, and scam apps that flood the App Store that turned it into the joke it is nowadays.

"Quality control be damned, we got their $100 a year Apple Developer subscription and they bought a Mac or two so they can post whatever the hell they want on our store"

I don't see much point in having ChatGPT as an app on your phone.. How often does one use it after the initial newness wears off?

This list is kinda depressing...I don't have a single game installed on my iPhone.
I use it pretty regularly. It helps me with work and practicing other languages, and just answering questions that are more complex than I can type into a google search.

I feel like Minecraft, Heads Up!, Geometry Dash, Bloons TD, Plague Inc., and Five Nights at Freddy's have been top 10 games for years. Where's the new stuff and why isn't it taking off in popularity? Is anything worth its salt just going to Apple Arcade?

The fact Temu is the #1 app on the App Store despite it being a clear scam is proof enough Apple does not vet anything and why all their excuses to why iOS shouldn't have sideloading hold no water.
Lol what? Temu is not a scam. Ordered many times. zero issues.

I'm assuming you might be talking about sometimes receiving products not as described to which Temu will offer a refund and ask for nothing in return. Meanwhile the Sandisk SD card I ordered from Amazon shipped by Amazon was a counterfeit.

But anything to bash Apple I guess, right?

Well no, people who think Temu is a scam are bsing.

Ordered there many times, zero problems.

It's not Apple's job to check the merch either since they don't take 30%. No different than Amazon selling fake SanDisk SD cards.

I’m not talking specifically about Temu.
