The Verge recently laid out in detail an old leaked contract between Spotify and some label.
They all got little important pieces in these contracts that say "if anybody gets a better deal, we get it too." So by Apple agreeing to pay some for the trial they probably have to pay them all. The already signed contracts have already made sure of it.
But they can afford it and they really should pay for their own promotions, they want to lure customers so it is their duty to pay.

I don't buy it because the math doesn't work out. Apple has almost a billion customers with credit cards attached, let's be generous and say 40% of them try out Apple Music, $7 per customer goes to the labels per three months so that should be $21 per customer. (21)(400,000,000) = 8.4 billion dollars. Are you telling me Apple is willing to throw out 8.4 billion dollars just because Siwft's rant? Obviously that's not gonna happen.

For all the Apple cheerleaders... You don't reward people for doing the right thing.

Apple should not be applauded or respected for doing what everyone knows they should have done to begin with.

If anything, more pressure should be applied, more often. With that much money in the bank, pay the people that deserve to be paid. Don't discount me for anything, as I may, or may not, choose to buy from you... But give those due, their due. Don't be phallic heads.

Kanye and Beyoncé would like to have a word with you.

Edit: I'm a ginger and probably blacker than Drake is. :D

Google was gifting Kanye's newest album so there you go... Beyonce is a well established singer but her moment at the top has gone long ago.

Edit: I've never seen a black ginger.

It has been mentioned that Apple giving something away that is not free, which it would be if artists get paid, would be price dumping, and would get Apple in trouble with the FTC. (One Bromwich is quite enough thank you!)
Maybe Apple figures that now that everybody, especially artists, has spoken up, it will be too hard for the FTC to make a case that paying artists is wrong.

You can't expect an honest answer when you use Al Gore math

Again, if the company you work for agreeds to deliver a product without getting paid for the first 3 months in exchange of "exposure" do they have the right to stop paying you because they made a bad deal? Are you going to blame the company you work for or the company they made the deal with?

I think your calculation is a bit off. You assume a direct relationship between the subscription fee and the payment to the labels, but there isn't one. With a payment of a few tenths of a cent per track, a consumer would have to listen to thousands of songs to generate $7 in revenue per month for the label. A big part of the $9,99 subscription fee is going to line the pocket of Apple, so the sum of 8,4 B is probably a bit too high as the majority of consumers will listen to a few hundred sings at best on a monthly basis.

Apple paid U2 and gave away their last album without attracting the attention of the FTC.

That's how spotify does it. Everyone thought they were paying per song played but it wasn't the case.

They would make such a beautiful couple.

And after the break-up, Swift could write two or three albums about Cue. :)

I am happy (though unbelievably surprised) that Apple decided to do the right thing. It's funny though that Cue probably spent a lot of time during the last 12 months on negotiating with the labels to get them to agree to the "three-months-for-free" terms, and now it all went away within 24 hours. Apple surely can afford it, but it must be rather painful for Cue on a personal level.

Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, posted on Twitter tonight in response to concerns that Apple would not be paying artists during the three month free trial of Apple Music. Cue wrote that Apple will now be paying artists during the initial free trial of Apple Music, in a reversal from their previous policy.....

Free means free and they should not be paid during this time frame. For god's sake these "artists" make a fortune - megalomaniacs. I don't pay for music and never will.

If you think eating and paying to stream music are of the same importance I think your priorities are a little wrong.
I am just saying everybody live their lives with what God gave them. if you can broke the law without any problem, go then. Why live your life by the laws made by some humans that probably are corrupted in their souls by money too

Cant believe apple bowed down to a whiny singer.
I think they should have done that in the first place anyway, so I'm happy. I don't really like Taylor Swift because she's too sarcastic and whiny (as you said). Also, she prevents me from Googling for Swift programming help sometimes.

Good on Taylor for sticking up for artist's rights! We get payed WAY TOO LITTLE for streaming content anyway! We certainly shouldn't by payed $0 for thousands of hours of work!

$9.99/month is super cheap for all the hours of enjoyment you get anyway. Imagine walking into a department store and renting everything for $9.99/month.

I'm glad Apple realised that they made mistake and decided to correct it.

So be corrupt like them? You speak like the people of my country: "If everyone steals why not you?"
Also, I've never been in a church and I've never read the bible but I believe it says something like "you should not steal", or that's not the God you mean?
