This isn't about certification. This is about Apple making their products incompatible with products made by other manufacturers for no good reason. Microsoft certifying third party controllers is irrelevant; the controller works if it's made properly, regardless of whether or not Microsoft signs off on it.
So then what about the games? You can't make games for Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo with out their digital signature on your game. They sure as heck can make their products incompatible with products made by other manufacturers of video games for no good reason. So what separates accessory makers?

You really think you can call mom fat and ugly, and still expect her to keep cooking your dinner? Sorry, Monster. Cry all you want, but at the end of the day, you overplayed your hand, so now you can't come to the party anymore. I wonder though, does this whiny lawyer have anything to say about Monster's ridiculous ~80% markups?
And apple doesn't mark up its products ridiculously

Can't speak to the legal grounding of Apple's actions, though it sounds a bit murky. It probably should be illegal though as it makes it really hard to call out the bad behavior of corporate giants without martyring yourself.

Regardless of the law, the optics on this are just bad. I'm not a fan of Monster by any stretch-- their products or their business practices-- but this kind of "don't bite the hand that feeds you" retaliatory nonsense just seems petty.

MFI shouldn't be subject to favoritism, positive or negative. Canceling true partnership deals and other business arrangements may make sense, but generic peripheral licensing?

Is it childish if your neighbor sues you(for whatever reason) and you decide to stop inviting him to your monthly neighborhood BBQ? Some will also say that's childish.
So if Monster has a legitimate case against Beats. Apple bought beats knowing above the case. They should just drop it because Apple is mad. Smh

It's a normal reaction.

If someone comes over to my house and slips on my driveway and breaks their ankle and sues me, regardless of whether the lawsuit has merit, I'm not inviting them over to my house again.

If the person tried to work out the broken ankle issue directly with me, without a lawsuit, we might remain friends.
Yes but isn't Monster paying millions for the certification. Is your neighbor paying you millions to walk on your sidewalk

What Apple did is 100% what freedom means. Freedom should apply to everyone, but alas today, everyone wants to control everyone else with the mantra "I want to be free, but you should follow my wants, desires, and wishes because I know better than you". Freedom should mean that you can buy from whomever you want to and baring discrimination the manufacturer should be able to license and enter into business agreements with anyone they want to. If one is concerned with freedom, then that should be the end of the story whether it involves sneezes or not.
Freedom doesn't mean "no rules". You say it yourself: "barring discrimination". So there has to be limits on individual behavior.

The goal should be to maximize the freedom of society, not the most powerful individuals in that society. My issue with what Apple did is that it means that smaller companies will be unable to file grievances against larger companies that their business depends on.

"Nice little gold plated cable business you've got there, it would be a shame if something happened to it..."

never liked monster accessories, especially cables or headphones, far too overpriced imho. Their headphones were pretty average in performance, for a huge premium.

Their headphones are head and shoulders above Beats for the same price. Still over priced, but a value when compared to Beats

There is enough irony dripping from this post to fix California's drought.

All you folks who think Apple is being a bully here, go google "Monster trademark lawsuit."

just like how Apple went after everyone who happened to use an apple in their logo...or how they went after Amazon because they called their app store Amazon app store.

Okay, fair enough. But wait a second...

How is Apple marking up its products ridiculously? Don't like the price don't buy them. No pressure from them to buy.

Your bias is showing...

No bias in this situation. Apple does the same thing as monster. Crazy mark up. I never said it was gouging anyone. I choose to use an iPhone. I chose to pay the price. I don't feel gouged at all

They "convinced" the CEO to sell his 5% and now he wishes he hadn't. You can't go round suing prople over your own bad business decisions/mistakes/regrets!

Is this Monster the same that makes the energy drink? There's no logo in this article to indicate what Monster we're talking about...

I don't agree at all. Monster actively rip off guillable consumers with £150 HDMI cables that do exactly the same job as a £6 one

You can't go and buy an exact equivelent to a Macbook for £60...

I am sure Apple is only making a fewpennies off those 29 dollar 2m lighting charging cables and they cost easily 26 to 27 dollars to make....

I often see myself asking this question on MacRumors: are the posters here primarily stockholders or consumers?

usually stockholders are also consumers but not necessarily vice versa. so i would say primarily consumers and stockholders then consumers who aren't stockholders. i am quite sure anyone who gets passionate about a company like apple has a vested interest either in or out of it.
