Here
I was reading reviews of the 9.7" review on Ars Technica and apparently the new cover only fits if you use the case. That's so lame as I've used the smart covers for years.

The new Smart Covers are pretty much the same as the old ones, but when you’re just using the cover by itself it hangs over the edge of the tablet just a little when closed in a way that looks and feels a little awkward when you’re handling it. I have dubbed this phenomenon “overflap,” and the overflap seems to be happening because Apple designed this particular Smart Cover to fit better with the Silicone Case rather than the iPad itself. Put on a Silicone Case (which covers the rear of the tablet and joins with the Smart Cover to provide full protection) and the Cover fits perfectly.

Yeah this is super lame. The only reason I'm not more annoyed by it is the fact that they stopped carrying leather smart covers anyway, so I wouldn't be buying one of these in the first place. Leather and high tech go together like no other, and I'm not gonna swath mine in silicone and rubber, eh.

I'll probably still order it because I use my smart cover a lot and when in use I'll never notice it.

The iPad Mini 3 I have lying around has the same type of overlap with its smart cover. It has no impact whatsoever on real use.

Wow. Won't be getting that then. I had ordered he silicon rear case too but really can't justify paying $100 for their combo it's ridiculous how much they charge for each piece.

Anyway. One more reason now. You know $10 solutions will
Be up in a week or two on Amazon and three or four days on eBay.

That's ridiculousness

I can't wait to find a cheapy clone for the SmartCover that fits better and has magnets. Meanwhile, I'm stuck with "Mr. Flappy" on both my Pros, I guess. :/

Ugh, this is disgusting and will annoy me. I've always had a smart cover since the days of the iPad 2. Not sure if this will make me look elsewhere or not. I'll need to see it in person. Not interested in buying a silicone back, especially one from Apple that cost $69. I don't take my iPad outside and don't have kids yet. The screen cover and stand are all I need.

My smart cover was supposed to be delivered today, but UPS misrouted it so maybe tomorrow. If anyone has a new one and can throw it over the Air 2 post a picture. I'm just hoping its a manufacturing variance.

I cancelled my order when I read this. I will wait until some reviews from real users confirm or hopefully say otherwise. If true it would really piss me off and would force me to get an Air 2 as I don't want 3rd party smart covers (I don't own any iPads yet).

What I posted is from a real review.

I did this yesterday for kicks and it's awful. Definitely not made to go on an Air 2. The magnets didn't match up, so the edge of the flap sticks up a bit, and it seems pretty large. There is a small overhang on my iPad 12.9" w/its matching SmartCover, but it doesn't seem as bad as when I stuck the 9.7 on the Air 2.

I'll try to snap a couple of pics later tonight of the iPad Pro 9.7" cover on an Air 2 and post.

Crap, sounds like it's going to live up to the picture in the Ars Technica post. Thanks for the update. Interested to see the pics if possible.

Well it is annoying, but if I'm using the iPad the cover will either be off or folded back. When I carry it I put it in a bag so I'll still buy one. I like having a cover and stand in one.

Sorry it took so long to show some pics of an iPad Pro 9.7" SmartCover on an iPad Air 2... here they are:

The overhang is icky. Hopefully it isn't as bad on an iPad Pro 9.7" tomorrow, we'll see.

It will be as bad, they're the same dimensions. For me, if I'm using the ipad, the cover is either off or folded back into a triangle. So the overhang is only present when the tablet is not in use and I wouldn't care.

Ugh, thanks for verifying. I'm tempted to return it after testing it tomorrow, but I really need *some* kind of screen protection on the cover when in transit, and I do like the triangle fold when I've got it propped up on a desk. Oh to have a nice, inexpensive clone with magnets that fit the front better but still folds around in the back cleanly. :/

I carry mine around in a zip carrier between places, so the over flap isn't an issue there. The only time it's annoying are when I carry it around the house (but I usually take the cover off) or when I hold it and have the cover folded behind the devices.

Yes I think it's a poor design, but I'm going to stay with Apple because I've never had my device fall over or snap off when using the cover as a stand. I'm cautious about the cheap $10 knock off magnets. Also, magnets can hurt elections and I know Apple's magnets and their strength/places is exactly right for the device.

It is overpriced to me, and I'm sure there are 3rd parties that are just as good, but I still like first party stuff (Apple's ideal sucker I guess :p )

Thanks for this. You have saved me from making a purchase mistake.

This is really cheeky of Apple. This along with the protruding camera to try and sell some cases. Smh.

I've been using the SmartCover since iPad 2 days -- iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad Air, and now 12.9" and 9.7". @Traverse is right about the magnets never failing -- that's why I've always just used a SmartCover in the front and a DecalGirl skin in the back (until the Pros - that gold and rose gold finish is too beautiful to cover with a sticker).

I carry my 12.9" Pro in an AmazonBasics zip sleeve when in transit, just to have that extra padding. I'll have to go find my old iPad Air zip sleeve today and I'll probably just keep the SmartCover and use the neoprene zip sleeves when in transit.

The overhang / flappies still give me mild heartburn though. :p
