The reason I still carry a wallet with me is because I need to put the Drivers License somewhere. I haven't seen California's digital app, but I've heard it's awful and that's good enough to not download it. Our government doesn't know technology even if you made it so simple.

This is a solution looking for a problem.

"License and registration, please."

"Oh, here officer. Just take my whole unlocked phone and feel free to do whatever you want with it."

Doesn’t work like that. I’ve stopped countless motorists without their physical license on them but they have a photo of it. Have them expand the photo, hold it out the window and take a photo of it from my phone so I can do my thing. If you give your unlocked phone to an Officer or if they request it, something ain’t right.

This might be one of the holdups… equipping Police Departments with the proper technology to handle a digital ID. Portable wireless scanner or an app with scanning functionality on a department issued cell phone.

Yeah, I'm sure every LEO around can't wait to add yet another item to his / her utility belt. Right.

Nobody needs or wants this tech. At all.

Well, I do but to each their own. Already got my house keys, car keys, credit cards, medical insurance, car insurance, (game tickets, plane tickets, Disney passes, when applicable, etc) on my phone. Would love to add my driver license too. Then again, I’m a self proclaimed tech nerd so there’s that.

My Dept already issues cell phones (iPhone SE 3) so I’m sure it could be integrated without adding anything else to the belt. iPhones are able to scan.

Ever drop someone’s driver license in the crevice between the center console and the seat? The struggle is real! lol.

The website for California mobile drivers license says that third party wallets (Apple and Google wallet) will be supported in the future. I won’t judge the California mDL until it’s fully released and out of the pilot phase.
The barometer of acceptance is TSA. I’ve tried at several California airports and the California mDL has never been accepted, not once.

when I got my CA mDL it said 3 airports were supported, it's quite while ago but I think SFO and LAX were mentioned. Luckily I haven't had to fly in quite some time so could never experience it myself, and, have not needed to show it to a law enforcement officer either ;)
Have had my doubts of the usefulness ...

I’ve tried it multiple times at LAX without success. One time in Terminal 5 (Jet Blue) there was even a sign that said that California mDL was an acceptable form of ID at the TSA checkpoint point. Didn’t matter, the TSA officer still insisted on a physical ID or passport.

Once in a great while I will get a request for my ID when making a purchase, they would not recognize the California mDL either but they accepted a photo on my drivers license that I had on my phone.

Let’s face it, digital isn’t where it’s at for most old people who make all the decisions. I’m on a three month vacation in Europe and I still love how everyone knows what Apple Pay is. At home in good old Virginny there are many places that are clueless.
There-month vacation?! I need to revaluate my life!

Enjoy!! 😊

This is a solution without a problem. Facial recognition is the future in airports and you don't want the police handling your phone.

What an ageist thing to say. My guess is you are less intelligent than the people you mock. We all walk different paths and not everyone wants their lives to revolve around a cell phone.

Most of the promised states Apple had promised would have IDs in wallet, unfortunately have to change the state laws to allow digital ID, and most of the bills to make that happened have died in the committee or got voted down so far.

And it all has to do with privacy unfortunately.
Unfortunately? That pesky constitution.

Part of it is the highly federal nature of how the United States is constituted. Things like IDs are individual states’ issues. The notion of a national ID has been met with a lot of suspicion and has never gotten anywhere. If you have ever had any issues with how Brussels determines aspects of your life without your having recourse, then you know how many Americans feel about the U.S. Federal Government regulating something.
Federal id also restricts freedom of movement, a constitutionally protected right.

Good thing that police (actually it's the TSA) don't handle your phone on this system. You scan it with NFC to their reader. No one hands over any phones.
