Apple is evaluating OLED displays for the iPhone 14 this week ahead of mass production, The Elec reports.

The OLED display panels in question are reportedly destined for the standard, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 model, with mass production due to begin between July and August.

The displays are from Chinese display panel maker BOE, which was embroiled in controversy earlier this year after Apple discovered that the supplier secretly changed the circuit width of thin-film transistors on OLED panels for the iPhone 13. After BOE executives visited Cupertino to resolve the situation with Apple, the OLED panels were approved once again, not least because its presence in the supply chain puts pressure on Samsung Display and LG Display to be more competitive and cut prices.

The debacle with changes to the iPhone 13's display is likely to cap the number of displays that Apple orders from BOE at around five million. BOE hopes to receive Apple's approval before the end of June, but the supplier is said to be several weeks behind Samsung and LG. Despite delays with manufacturers in China, the iPhone 14 lineup is expected to launch as normal in the fall.

I’m bored of new iPhone hype when they do so little new that’s really a must hardware wise as we’re kind of hitting peak iPhone now, which is why buying a new one each year just to say you’ve got the latest doesn’t even mean you’ve got the greatest anymore because they’re probably cutting back on the quality of the internal cheaper components so Apple keeps that important profit margin and don’t get me started on well it’s got this years modem because I don’t know any network that utilises the full capability of the one in the 13 pro let alone one that will be in the 14 pro. But I’m not a bored of my 13 pro because it doesn’t do anything for me to get bored of as it’s just a tool, and I don’t get bored of screwdrivers and spanners.

I’m bored of new iPhone hype
Why are you commenting then if you are bored?
when they do so little new
Clearly subjective.
that’s really a must hardware wise as we’re kind of hitting peak iPhone now,
Again, subjective.
which is why buying a new one each year just to say you’ve got the latest doesn’t even mean you’ve got the greatest anymore
Much more subjective.
because they’re probably cutting back on the quality of the internal cheaper components
Rampant speculation.
so Apple keeps that important profit margin
Apple is a for profit company.
and don’t get me started on well it’s got this years modem
It's an important consideration to some.
because I don’t know any network that utilises the full capability of the one in the 13 pro let alone one that will be in the 14 pro.
Changes in cell phone service take time to ramp up.
But I’m not a bored of my 13 pro because it doesn’t do anything for me to get bored of
Cool and great for you.
as it’s just a tool,
Tools are important. One can cut vegetables with a dull knife or sharp knife. Up to you.
and I don’t get bored of screwdrivers and spanners.
No, but there are different tools for different folks.

That statement that “it’s just a tool” is exactly what Blackberry was saying as it was in decline. They got smug in their position and nothing cutting edge came out and people moved on. Apple’s problem is that they don’t make much hardware themselves and rely on others. Samsung makes foldable phones because they make the actual displays, because Apple does not make displays they can’t be first in innovation, Apple has to wait until Samsung lets their tech be used by them.

That claim they wait for tech to develop is just like Blackberry, what made both popular was innovation and then the brand was not innovative anymore. Tim Cook is hurredly making Apple a subscription company and away from dependence on phones that accounted for half their revenue.

Like Blackberry, if they continue on this path people will wise up go elsewhere. Like Blackberry has moved toward a cyber security company, Apple is moving as fast as possible to more diversity and away from hardware. IBM successfully did this years ago. Anyway, dealing with BOE to keep costs down at the expense of their product is not good for the end user. Some on these forums complained about panel touch issues and so-forth and were these from out of spec panels?

History has a habit of repeating itself.

Hurry up Apple I'm getting bored with my 13Pro Max

“Hurry up, Apple! I'm getting tired of my iPhone 4.”

Huh? Something internally contradictory here! Contrast “if they continue on this path people will wise up and go elsewhere” with “moving as fast as possible to more diversity…IBM successfully did this”.

Which history is repeating itself? Blackberry collapsing or IBM's success? Is Apple continuing on the same path or not? Which path is that?!

Unlike Blackberry, Apple is innovating its products, expanding its markets, moving into new markets, embracing subscriptions, etc.

It's also become the world's most valuable company.

Apple is nothing like Blackberry at all.

As to innovation and change, I presume you've missed all the product launches and news over the past several years: Apple Watch, Apple TV and its service, Apple Silicon, new M1 and M2 MacBooks, the Studio, Air Tags, new OSs, etc.

This doesn't seem credible - Apple evaluating something as central as an iPhone screen this close to production. If anything, I'd say that if this is indeed an evaluation, it's for the iPhone 15.

There is one thing Apple has that Blackberry did not have and that is loyal fans. I have seen people blow thousands of dollars in Apple products every single year. That puts money in Apple's pockets whether we like or not. Even if Apple continues in this direction, It could takes years before Apple starts feeling the pressure and want to innovate. Point being there not going anywhere anytime soon.

Have you not noticed any difference on the battery life and played around with the Macro Mode?
Weirdly enough I was getting better battery life on my 11PM, that thing would go for 2 whole days.

I haven't played with Macro Mode at all and as for ProMotion...the first day I got the 13PM I started looking for it about 2 hours in and I sort of noticed it then promptly forgot about it. Great solid phone though.

On what basis do you make the first statement? Blackberries - aka "Crackberries" had famously 'loyal' fans. But fandom is driven by the desire to follow something 'cool' - and what's cool changes. So a company that does not use its current fanbase to introduce the next cool thing is a passing fad that goes bankrupt. That's what happened to the makers of Blackberry. The OP has no clue about Apple in making the comparison to Blackberry. Apple's fan base has increased over 4 decades - because Apple has come out with cool new products for that long. While the iPhone may have peaked technology wise, it's also become an indispensable tool for a billion folks on the planet. And Apple has already laid the groundwork for the next 'cool' thing(s) - AR, which, at least in its initial form, will likely use an iPhone as its "brain".

Everyone thinks nothing will change - but it does. I’m old enough to remember when IBM was huge and all hardware. Microsoft tried hardware then reverses and went into cloud computing to be bigger than ever. All changed to survive.

Go back to the product launches last year of the Apple Watch and iPhone and see what the comments were back then in real time. I rest my case.
