Echoing a previous report indicating that Apple's sales numbers and marketshare are on the rise, IDC reported that worldwide PC shipments were up by more than 17% this past quarter.

With it Apple saw a 44.6% increase year-over-year. Raising its marketshare percentange from 3.3% to 4.3% based on IDC's numbers.

Investor's Business Daily attributes this rise in marketshare to a "halo effect" from the iPod spilling over into Macintosh sales.

Marketshare percentages are always mis-identified as platform percentages

(ie: new computers purchased vs computers actually in use)

Halo

Well considering how much problems apple has had updating their computers what other then a Halo effect can it be. Ones the Intel machines start shipping thing should get alot better.

But still only 4.3%

Do you know what this means? It means 95.7% of computer users in the world are idiots. So sad.

Yeah. I notice myself that I see a suprising number of iBooks and Powerbooks in my lectures at school. More Apple laptops than any other brand. And everyone seems to think its "cool" to buy a mac. I hope this means increased support of the platform, not just bs "photobooth".

I sure hope the pro thing on Wed. comes out with some innovative new pro-apps. Also, when is the "asteroid" going to come out? If I would have to make one stupid, no info at all claim for this wednesday about which non-"mac" product will be released onside new hi-def software and powerbooks/power macs, it would be the asteroid!

first and more.

It appears that someone is tired from that broken link.
<a/> gave me quite the laugh.

Anyways... let's not start the "1st" thing on this forum. That would be horrible.

As others have pointed out, these sorts of 'market share' figures are gross underestimations of the installed base.

If you take out all the computers being sold as cash-registers, or process controllers, or other widgets (i.e. the ones not being used as 'general purpose personal computers') and then factor in the turnover differences (people replace their macs significantly less frequently than they replace their PCs, so 10 people buying PC will buy more PCs over time than 10 people buying Macs), the installed base of Macs is probably around 12-18%.

Still, it's good to see some increase in the sales figures as well.

Cheers

Every time I hear the term "iPod 'Halo' effect" I think of the game, Halo...

Those linux guys got Doom (original) ported to the iPod... I wonder if they can do that for Halo ;)

(for those who read way to seriously into forum posts, that was a joke. Halo is way to over-powered for an iPod)

If the whole world used Macs we'd be just like them. That would be more sad.

Again you mean?

To the subject, this is good news. I notice more and more people on campus walking around with iBooks. Good stuff.

Don't forget to count Linux users as enlightened. (Just as, a little more, a little less.)

Well he is just a newbie, I'm sure someone well fix it shortly.

It's good to see that market share on the rise. I'm anxious to see how things go if Apple does start a new marketing campaign.

Impressive gain. The big question is whether things will accellerate or decelerate during the Intel transition, and whether Apple can come up with anything else that has a real halo effect (video, or something else). In a couple years 10% isn't looking impossible.

I concur, linux users are exempt from the idiot title.

My intent was only to offend windows users. :p

If only Apple Store Employees act less snob and not like from heaven. :(
Yeah, some of them need a good verbal spanking. Give it to them. I usually do... ;)

Yet despite all this some blowhard suck up to Gates and Co. will spout how Apple's stock should be devalued because they didn't sell a gabillion dollars (after all, the stock market is about dumb money, not real money) and their stock prices will fall due to someone's word. Seems the more Apple does well the more critics come out of the woodwork to pile on any mistep. Meanwhile Microcrap is out there stinking up the other 96% of the computer world with incredibly bad and buggy, virus laden software and nobody cares how craptacular they are. THAT'S why the other 96% are idiots, they're sheep to inferior product.

Note: My apologies to Linux users, if I knew your percentages I'd adjust accordingly.

Wow-

Is this really the same company that a very short 7 years ago was on the verge of bankruptcy and pretty much given up for dead? Is there a better snake and oil salesman on earth? Imagine if apple hadn't collectively pulled its head out of its a$$ and re-hired Jobs... Cringe...

Very true.

From 3.3 to 4.3 is a 30% increase. That is awesome!

Keep on truck'in Apple.
