Hey guys,

So I was looking at other threads where people had ordered the 4S from AT&T, and realized, that AT&T doesn't charge sales tax. Now, I live in California which means I paid ~ $52 tax for each 16GB iphone I ordered (3 of them so total ~$156)...I was wondering if I could cancel my order with Apple, and re-order them at AT&T, and not have to pay the $156.

Is this legal? Can I do this?

Thanks!

This is completely legal. Just give a call to Apple at 1800-My-Apple
and they will help you out.

At&t WILL charge the sales tax, in any state where there is sales tax.
As long as At&t has a retail operation present....

Can anyone confirm this? What have people in California's order totals been through AT&T?

I also live in California and ordered online. I noticed that the pricing when you checkout doesn't include taxes. They're added on after your order ships.

You are paying taxes on the unsubsidized price of the iPhone in California PERIOD...

Strange...Last year, I bought the iPhone 4 through AT&T and didn't pay taxes. I just forgot about that till now and looked at my bill from last year, and lo and behold, grand total was $199... Is this a new law?

No, it's not. They've always charged sales tax. If you weren't charged it last year it must have a some sort of glitch.

Where did you see $199 charge? I mean on the wireless bill or on CC statement?

Somehow i feel that ATT did not charge me at all for iPhone 4.

As I stated before, I have (5) iPhones on my Family Plan and I've been paying taxes on my iPhones at the unsubsidized rate since 2007. If you didn't pay taxes; my hat is off to you b/c I'm definitely not in the same boat...

You live in AT&T? They should definitely give you a discount then.

it goes by state taxes some states require Texas on the subsidized price some states only charge taxes on the price paid. $199 $299 etc. So what ever the state requires no more or less.

lol @ trying to avoid uncle Sam sales tax! Not happening buddy! BTW if you didn't see the sales tax is because it will get charge whenever you received the iPhone and your first bill cycle.

Paying sales tax on the full unsubsidized price is bogus. If AT&T is gonna pay for part of my phone, they should have to pay their part of the sales tax too.

ATT absolutely collects sales tax in CA. CA also requires that sales tax be paid on the unsubsidized price of the phone.
