Everything has a 100% failure rate. Nothing lasts forever.
That includes humans too

As for the OP, sounds like the salesman was pushing you to getting a more expensive option.

The cost of hard drives are cheap and they are considered user replaceable so you don't even need apple to do it.

On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Ha! Exactly what came to mind when I saw the thread title.

The salesperson was probably just using this language to get the idea that you should NEVER trust your data to just one HDD.

Yes, your internal drive will probably fail at some point. If you have a backup, who cares?

All drives will eventually die. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A BACKUP. It should just be a matter of course for all computer purchasers.

A good backup strategy is the key. And it is also so easy to do with our Macs. You could either just use Time Machine alone, or in combination with the SuperDuper! I use the Time Machine and also every evening I have SuperDuper! do a full image update of my main drive. This way I have another HD to boot off from that has my last day's data image, plus I have the hourly updates from that point on.

I don't think the OP ever said that the salesman said that Mac HDDs have a 100% failure rate, but HDDs in general. Am I missing something? Everyone is acting as if he had said that HDDs in PCs last longer.

A few of computers at school are from 1996. They have these little 5Gb drives in them. The drives still work fine. I've never had a HD fail on me. Our old dell from 2003, has been scrapped for parts, and the drive is in an enclosure working great. The hard drive in my Aunt's 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook from 2005 runs fine too. Some will fail, other last a long time.
