As part of its iOS 13 unveiling today at WWDC, Apple announced what it called "the biggest update to CarPlay yet."

The new version of CarPlay will feature a new interactive dashboard to view music, maps and more in a single view. It also includes a new, more advanced in-vehicle version of Apple Maps.

The Calendar and Music apps have also been redesigned to improve the user experience, while Siri will be able to deliver directions and music from third-party apps like Pandora and Waze.

Probably a silly question - but will CarPlay need to be updated on my car as well as the phone? Or will it only be for new builds?

Your car has some software installed to be CarPlay compatible, but the updates and actual CarPlay software is in iOS. All you have to do to update CarPlay is use the latest iOS on your connected device.

Interesting. So the CarPlay-enabled cars don't ever get firmware or software (updates)?

Will I be able to navigate my music while driving instead of it being crippled to recently played, and I end up grabbing my iPhone anyways which defeats the purpose???

I can browse my entire library on my aftermarket head unit while driving. ‍♂️

That’s not a CarPlay limitation...that is dependent on the car you drive and is one of the things the manufacturer controls.

Sense full remark: i will not be tempted to loose Waze for the summer. Thanks for that!

6s, SE and all above (iPad reqs are not in my brain yet, sorry)

You won’t lose Waze...it is already supported by CarPlay. Just like I won’t lose Waze on my iPhone simply because I’m on an iOS13 beta.

Besides, no one said any third party navigation apps on CarPlay would have access to these improvements anyway in September.

Worst case is, you will have Waze or Google Maps full screen for now. Can someone verify?

Sorry... I meant I don't want to end up not being able to use Waze on my car display. That was what I understood would be the case... Silly me: off course, you're totally right - the current version must still be useable albeit with an old style display - if confirmed, that is.

So, can anyone please report on how current third party app versions behave on iOS 13 beta?

Not a silly question at all. CarPlay did not need to be updated in my car. The new version just worked. It is still in early Beta, I would not recommend it for most at this point.

Do we need a super wide display as show in the WWDC keynote to get this extra view?
I believe my display is 12" x 9" ( or somewhere really close to that ) and the new CarPlay looks fantastic.

Not sure I understand your issues. You should always be capable of navigating your music using CarPlay. I would only recommend using the steering wheel controls to skip, repeat, change volume while you are actively driving. Navigating CarPlay menus should be done by passenger or while pulled over in a safe spot.
