Yes, my license has a scan code on the back that I suppose gives full information. Nevertheless, I'm confident Massachusetts will be the last state to enable digital ID. After all, we were last to allow right turn on red, and only when the Feds threatened to withhold highway funding.
Nevada will be the last state...

Years and years and years of “don’t unlock your phone around cops”, and now everyone wants to have to unlock their phone to show ID. I dunno, just seems weird to me.
A reasonable take – however you don’t hand your phone over to TSA at airports; it never leaves your hand. You unlock, tap a reader, and you’re done. It’s only handing over the ID info to TSA.

At HNL they have they’ve had the signage for awhile now but it has never worked for me (HI DL) - it’s doing something because it asks me to approve transmitting biographic data but then fails to validate for some reason. Now that they have Clear, I use that, and when they tap their phone on the reader to transmit my info, it works. Perhaps it just doesn’t like Hawaii IDs.

I know why but why is it taking so long to offer a digital ID in all states. The info is already digital when the license is printed and handed over, just make the data available for secure platforms.
Because that’s how government works. Apple is not scratching the right backs to make it happen. The a guy that’s selling the blank cards for the drivers license donated $100k to representative Billy Bob. Why would Billy Bob hurt his friend’s business? Now, if Tim Apple were to donate $250k to Billy Bob well then he would just push his friend out of the way.

Either way, thinking about it why would anyone want to hand their unlocked smart phone to a police officer. At that point, you are consenting for him to do whatever he wants with your phone. Just keep the little piece of government issued plastic on you and everything is good. It’s not like they’re not going to charge you the same price for your NFT identification card.

If you use your phone for your insurance card, then you would not want to use it for DL/ID

You need to open the insurance card and use guided access to lock that App, then allow the officer to read.
If you use it for both you cannot lock to an App, and are giving access to your phone. Using guided access like this also puts the phone in a password to open, non bio open state, that many states law enforcement can force you to use.

Many authorities do not accept the digital ID even if it's state offered, including many airports.
Seems pointless to me.

You dont need to unlock the phone to show items in wallet unless you turn the double-click ability off. Even when you do authorize the wallet, the phone itself is locked just like it is when you authorize a card for ApplePay. I need to hand my phone to someone at a drive through window at times which I dont like to do but I'm not too worried because the phone wont allow them to see anything else.

I do get where you're coming from though. It potentially opens you up for abuse but not having to carry a physical wallet or to at least have a backup would be a nice option that allows me to make the personal choice for use.

Florida would rather have hell freeze over than to do something like this
My only hope is that since they are working on a new solution, they might make a Apple Wallet and Google Wallet solution. They better not do another app, because the last one was utter *******.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I'm still confident MA will be last, though. :)

That is a PDF417 barcode. It tells you what is on the front, but provides no validation mechanism (you could create a bogus license and create what ever you want in the barcode). The entire point of a digital license is that it be verifiable to anyone scanning it. Without that capability, they may as well just allow use of pictures of your license.
The code is the "machine readable zone", it holds the key to open up the data stored on the RFID, the NFC chip in a license or ID. So you need that code to retrieve data stored on the chip

...and then the TSA Rep says that they need your actual DL.

Because--they explain--that you need to be TSA Pre for that to 'work'....

That’s odd, and would seem to defeat the point. Although the program is still in pilot phase, or so it seems. Digital IDs always struck me as a 10-15-year project.

Yes; it does defeat the implied intent.

I did a personal test-pilot last year, and:

Either the TSA reps involved could not be arsed with the intricacies of the Process.

Or, all our dreams are gradually (and magnificently) being sucked into some Administrative Singularity, the even horizon of which will never reach Visible Spectrum.

Florida’s current digital id doesn’t work at all. The few times I looked at my digital is, it said I needed to update the app or reload my id. Then reloading my id takes dozens of steps. Typical.
