Apple today shared a new ad that promotes MacBooks as the "best choice for college."

In the 90-second video, students are frustrated by but eventually overcome creative block while working on assignments like screenplays and CADs.

"Mac laptops are your best choice for college," says Apple. "Whether you're studying business, engineering, design, or the arts — get started on Mac."

The ad is set to the song "I'VE GOT THIS ALL UNDER CONTROL" by Willow Kayne.

With the MacBook Neo, the Mac is more affordable than ever. In the U.S., the laptop starts at just $499 for college students who verify their enrollment.

Students can learn more about the Mac on Apple's College Students page.

Get started on Mac*

*If you can find one.

Bestbuy has all Neos in stock except the silver 512.

All for immediate delivery, some for immediate pickup and others for pickup within a few days.

Never saw a computer ad with a shower scene before 🤣

I thought it worked. Really showed frustration with work/classes and how getting past that feels once the inspiration hits.

Also I liked that they didn't show frustrated students with PCs and happy students with Macs. That would have been lame.

Apple's better for everything I do. I have a mac and a PC, but I dunno that the company can keep criticizing PCs for their bugginess. PCs cab still be buggier, but not always, and MacOS just keeps getting worse and worse, and it only has to work on Apple products, so it's kind of tragic to see the direction it's been going in. Anyone who uses XCode knows what a disaster it is.

Tahoe has very much changed the game here, I agree.

Not sure Apple should be throwing stones in the Liquid Glass house.

Agreed. Comparative ads where you cast aspersions at your competitors is by default demonstrating a weaker position for the advertiser; pretending that your competitor doesn't even exist is I think one of the better strategies. Apple has tried both approaches over the years, and I personally prefer this approach.

Also, showing the users actually being frustrated on their Mac (and eventually getting things "under control") is a distinctly human approach.

Life is messy; this ad is relatable.

They should show me using Tahoe if they want to see frustration.

Unfortunately, I've still not gotten it under control

Kind of weird to make CAD a centerpiece here, when CAD is one of the "creative" areas where choices on Mac are substantially limited. For standard apps, you've got Fusion (shown), OnShape, and Rhino - then you've got the bit players (like Shapr3d, FreeCAD, etc.) - but big names like Solidworks*, NX, Creo, and SolidEdge are all Windows-only.

* Solidworks does have the web-based version that you can use, but then you don't get any of the CAM functionality.

I actually had to go back and watch the spot again to see if I missed any mention of PC bugginess or stone throwing. Not saying those statements are without merit, I just don't understand their connection to the OP.

While I'm about as far from this ad's target audience as one can get, I certainly can relate to the narrative — the initial frustration that can accompany any creative/problem solving endeavor... To those quite, fragile, fleeting mind-shower moments where a new approach or potential quietly raises their hand... To that euphoric feeling of breaking through... This ad does such a great job of capturing that process, that experience. Certainly unlike anything ad I can recall. And as @Jumpthesnark mentioned, I also can't say I've ever seen a shower scene in a computer ad. Let alone one that actually works to further the narrative. So, so good.

That said, I'd be curious to learn how this ad lands with its target audience. My money says Apple nailed it. I'm guessing this ad will likely play well/prove relatable with students. Does that sell more Macs? Hard to say. But connection and relatability can prove powerful/critical factors in the slow burn that can be "the buyer's journey."

Chicken and the egg. Apple has to attract the userbase before their platform is considered a worthwhile target for those other big players you mentioned.

As much as I hate Liquid Glass I still think Mac OS offers a better experience than Windows unless you’re gaming.

Mac OS may be taking a nosedive toward the ground, but Windows has hit rock bottom and is showing signs of trying to keep digging

That's sort of a different topic, but I agree about Windows in terms of preferences.

Bugs/glitches ... it's all very mixed across platforms now.

For what one loses on Windows they gain a ton on flexibility and how the experience is.

The huge frustration with Tahoe, for me, is that Apple has it so locked down that one can't tweak away many/most of the issues one might have. Windows is much better on that particular angle.

Well, ok, but as for this 79 year old guy, I wish they would also put up some ads for us...I truly, some days, say that I love being an old man, I am in awe of the info that is at my fingertips, the communication that is available, the ability to put up small YouTube videos or to listen to Apple Music...
Apple, just works, so I don't have to.
Loving my five year old Mini m1, and waiting for the new M5.
