maybe they will update the mac mini once they figure out why their macbook pro's sound like rice krispies.
Ha Ha Ha! You are right! When you first turn it on for a few seconds I hear that and then stops. I think it is the fan.

The Mac Mini died when upgradeability was reduced to just HD...just like the iMac (21")...just like the MBP (only SSD)...just like the iDevices (nothing).

Like their new HQ, Apple products are moving to becoming completely sealed smooth products. Allows them to charge more out of the gate for their insanely overpriced upgrades.

it's true that they have insanely overpriced upgrades but at the same time 90% of their upgrades are unecessary. I know people who still use ipad 3 happily and it's just fine.

If you can upgrade yourself you can buy a stock config and upgrade later if you need to. SSD and RAM upgrades can breathe new life into an old Mac. A slow machine can suddenly not feel so slow anymore.

If you can't upgrade yourself you either buy a stock config and hope that you didn't need upgrades later (if you do you need to buy a whole new Mac) or pay inflated prices for upgrades that you may/may not need.

Ahh the old mac mini, yes I remember being able to pop these babies open and upgrade the RAM. Sadly Apple started enforcing their phone tendencies on us pro users with making things non upgradeable and what not...

It would be nice to see a solid refresh on the mini line been a while!

More good news and they should remain tight lipped about it. Why tell everyone when it should be a surprise.

I don't need a surprise. I'd much rather know what to expect so I can decide if I'm going to wait for the Mac Mini or go another route.

They are upgradable. Want more $50 RAM? Just buy a new $1000 computer.

If only even that were true. The most powerful mac mini Apple released was in 2012. They aren't upgradable because there's nothing to upgrade to.

Those 5 year old machines go on eBay well used for more than they cost brand new (with aftermarket SSDs and RAM) which is not even an option for the junk that's available now.

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller via Daring Fireball: "On that I'll say the Mac Mini is an important product in our lineup and we weren't bringing it up because it's more of a mix of consumer with some pro use. ... The Mac Mini remains a product in our lineup, but nothing more to say about it today."

Bull.

First, let me admit, that the mini has never been a central part of my computing arsenal. Even so, I have one (2009 model) with a heap of FW800 disks attached to it, working as my local file server. That it does brilliantly and efficiently, its uptime currently is ... (drum roll) 1134 days. It's a beautiful little machine, which has a lot of potential uses and users.

Even so, A product which has had no update in 900 days (that does not sound like a computer, more like a car) and has had no significant update since 2011 (an many could argue the 2014 version was actually a downgrade) is as good as dead. Period.

Ever since Adam Osborne managed to kill his computer company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect) by informing the pubic of coming developments at too early a stage, the whole industry has been vary of announcements. Currently the mini is still selling (not much, but still), and if anyone at Apple would tell the truth, those sales would stop. Hence, this "null signal" of "important product in our lineup".

Phil, you know, I actually used to like you...
