I also went in to order the zeiss inserts. When I did it asked to redo the measurement of my face. It now says I need a different size light seal. Is this because of the zeiss insert or should I be concerned the one that was picked for the initial order will be wrong if I wear it without inserts?

Ooo. Interesting. So are you guys still candidates for lasik?

Before someone hammers me for asking… ***this question is conversational, a genuine question, not some tone deaf suggestion to go “fix it”.

A hard lens will distort the image of your eyeball that’s being tracked to the sensors, because lenses by definition bend or focus light.

That’s in case anyone wants to understand the physical reality of why, instead of just bitching about upselling or claiming Apple is evil.

Carry on with the bitching though…

Yes still a candidate but not doing it. My dad has similar vision and had lasik and he developed occular edema from it.

So you not only cannot wear glasses with Vision Pro when nearly every other HMD lets you, but also contacts. You essentially have to pay $150 for prescription lenses for the $3500 HMD with no software

How is this gonna effect demos then because I have high astigmatism.
It’s worse, because medical conditions that require hard contact lenses can’t be corrected with glasses and hence also not with AVP prescription lenses.

Who wears hard contact lenses these days?
Some of us have eye conditions that can only be corrected through the use of hard contact lenses. Or, technically, an ocular transplant and I am not keen on the idea of having my eyeball replaced with a donor's eyeball if I can avoid it. One of my eyes is so useless with glasses or any other kind of contact lens that I have to wear an eye patch over it to prevent it from blurring what the other eye sees when not wearing hard contact lenses. With hard contact lenses I have near 20/20 vision in both eyes.

If someone that has a condition like mine can't use hard contact lenses with a device like this, there is zero reason for them to even consider investing in it. The Zeiss lenses would do little to nothing to address this.

Luckily this only affects eye tracking so it would really boil down to how good the alternative input methods were and if software built targeting this platform relied heavily on the eye tracking in such a way that using the alternative input methods was difficult or unintuitive. I haven't really been paying attention to this aspect of the device up to this point, so I am not 100% sure how it is implemented and how awkward alternative input would be.

As pioneers of accessibility, you’d think Apple would have figured out how to make VP only follow one eye if the other is lazy. If it’s possible.
AR/VR/3D Glasses work on the principle of presenting a different picture to each eye in order to create the illusion of depth. None of these system would work with people that have the condition of lazy eye.

Same here, I TRIED those tiny hard gas permeable lenses but they were terrible for me, eyes hurt, watering...just a mess! Aggravating condition, the eyesight in my left eye changes every 5-6 months from this. 😖
You should revisit this with your optometrist. I couldn't use the SRGP lenses for much the same reason, plus the deformity of my eye caused the lenses to pop out almost as soon as I got them in, resulting in more than one being lost forever and having to be replaced at great expense after only minutes of wear. This resulted in me doing everything I could to avoid wearing contact lenses as it seemed pointless.

Modern scleral lenses are much larger and much easier to wear. This describes them well. In my case my condition had deteriorated so badly that one of my eyes is so bad that when they ask me to use it to read the eye chart, I am lucky if I can identify the portion of the wall that is the projection of the chart, forget me actually reading anything. With the scleral lens that same eye is near perfect.

So, I was in much the same boat as you, my condition deteriorated to the point that I did not even drive for two years, then I got a new optometrist and he immediately recognized the problem and had me try the scleral lenses. It has been a year now and I am still seeing nearly as well as the day we finally got them dialed in.

NOTE: It took nearly 6 months to get everything correct, the location was not fully equipped to handle them yet when I started the process. This may require some dedication on your part, but it is well worth it. The insertion routine started out a mess with multiple attempts required and often took me a half-hour, or more, per day to start out. Now I do it first time, nearly every time and the process only takes about 3 minutes. It was worth the effort every step of the way, as soon as he showed me how near perfect my vision could be with the first test lenses, I knew it would be life changing, and it has been.

Having attempted hard contact lenses, I can think of other reasons to avoid them beyond any incompatibility with Apple Vision Pro.

If you get the AVP with the correct inserts and since AVP augment your vision (that means you see through them) then can they be used instead of vision glasses? Even while unpowered?

If you are required to wear corrective lenses to drive then can you use an AVP with inserts instead?

Unfortunately, lasik isn't an option for many people with keratoconus. In fact some people might only find out they have keratoconus when they try to get lasik and the surgeon breaks the bad news that their corneas are too thin.

LOL! What could go wrong when driving while wearing a headset??? Jail would be a best case scenario!

That's great! Will they also refund the price of the custom lenses, too?
I’d think so but I’m not 100% sure. Their return policy doesn’t list it as an exception. Although it also doesn‘t list engraved items as an exception but I’ve heard that they don’t take those, so not sure if that is true or not. You could take a screen shot of the return policy and chargeback the transaction if you can’t get Apple to approve the return.

Although strabismus is listed by apple I actually think if you have intermittent strabismus vision pro would be a great vision therapy tool for an optometrist to build software for

For other people here who have keratoconus or high levels of astigmatism, you can find out if Zeiss optical inserts are available for your prescription here: https://www.zeiss.com/vision-care/us/zeiss-optical-inserts.html

It was disappointing that Apple didn't have this link/information available through the Apple Vision Pro page.

It was even more disappointing to see that the prescription for Sph maxes out at -4.50 (even less for higher Cyl prescriptions) so pretty much anyone with moderate or progressed keratoconus can't get even optical inserts.

The same face requires a different light seals for with/without the inserts.
