When I read plastic and Apple in the same phrase, I get black and white flashbacks of the iPhone 5c and the white Macbook and then I get PSTD again.
The white macbooks problem wasn’t the plastic lid, that was solid. The problem was the keyboard deck that got eaten through in months.

Instead they decided just to offer last gen model as the "cheap" option and raised the prices of the other models.

They will squeeze everyone for all they're worth and they know they can get away with it because people want that logo to show off. I wonder what the breaking point will be for others.

Those iPad price hikes are shocking and I can't see myself buying another iPad or iPhone after my current ones are done. I was intending to buy a new Mac but no doubt we'll see more price hikes. That's the breaking point for me.

This would have been a good model for schools.

I worked in school IT for several years and you would always find management went 'ooh iPad will solve everything!' then order 100 immediately only for them to end up in a cupboard collecting dust a few months later

They're a great tool for teaching if the staff are fully commited to the idea but 90% of the time...they're not, also Android tablets could perform exactly the same tasks required at a fraction of the price but nope had to be iPads!

If they did release one, no one would buy the metal ones. So it was a good move to scrap it.

They should just discontinue the iPad Air M1 ($599) at this point with the iPad 10th Gen. priced at $449. Students don't need the M1, A14 is plenty enough for them. It should be just iPad mini, iPad 10th Gen. & iPad Pro.

The keyboard on the box makes total sense nowadays. This isn’t 2010 anymore, it’s time to put more accessories in the box
This is 2022. It's time to take everything out of the box that is not absolutely needed. Most of the stuff that goes into the box other than the primary product goes directly into a landfill or at best gets recycled.
When did it stop being 2010?
Perhaps 2011.
What is not ‘Air’ about any iPad except for the large screen ones? Light weight, wifi, no cables.

iPad lineup is a mess. And what is the USP? Too expensive, crippled OS, lousy keyboards. My iPad Pro is collecting dust, everyone in this home either uses their MacBook (Air or Pro) or their iPhone. I don’t know any creative or professional who prefers an iPad over their MacBook.
iPads are fantastic to use in an aircraft; More so if you are stuck in the front row and your laptop goes in the overhead.

Many students need far more power than most corporate executives. Yes, they have access to desktop computers. Have you ever tried writing and running code on a desktop at Qdoba? (Not all students have laptops.)

This would be a fantastic product if it was sold as education only. I think it would be a very bad thing for the general market. It would dilute the product catalog.

Who am I to question the great & powerful Apple… but if they wanted to get iPads in schools, scrapping the low cost plastic one does seem like a bad business move. To me it makes more sense then releasing a metal one that is practically an iPad Air. But what do i know? 🤷

The ePad!!

Was just talking about the eMac with a Twitter user and reminiscing on education-centered product designs. I think an iPad with iPhone 5c stylings would be a killer product, but clearly the MARGINS weren’t there
An ePad would be fantastic. It would probably cost the company more than they would make directly from it, but it would be a fantastic way to get the next generation of corporate leaders in the Apple ecosystem.

At the beginning of Covid and homeschooling I bought my kids (2nd and 5th grade) iPad Air 3’s. I just upgraded them to the iPad Air M1 256gb for $549 from shop my exchange. Got them the Magic Keyboard and I plan on it lasting them through high school. They don’t need the iPP and they can do any school work on the tablet and not have to carry a bulky, Dell school supplied laptop.

Um, I’m a professional artist here in NY, and I know PLENTY of artists who’ve abandoned their laptop for an iPad. I’m ONE of them!

Just a thought but, an ePad would probably take quite a bit more abuse than an iPad. It gets shoved into a backpack at the end of every class and gets carried around in a very high humidity environment. I don't know if a plastic ePad would last. (I am not saying the students would not take care of them. I am saying, they live a more energetic life. It's not like the device would be sitting on a desk everyday.)
