So I originally bought a size 9 solo braided loop but it was too tight.

I went on web chat with apple to talk about exchanging for a size 10. I spoke to someone rather unhelpful (told me to go to an apple store even though they're all closed in the UK). She went away and said that they will send a size 10 out and instructions on sending back the other band would be contained in the packaging for the new band. Great I thought seems straight forward.

I had a confirmation email for a repair come through which I thought was strange as it wasn't a repair and a charge of £0.00.

So the new band came and it was perfect but there was no instructions on what to do with the old band. So I called up this time and explained the situation but the lady on the phone wasn't getting it. She was insistent I would get a refund when sending the band back. I was honest and said that I wasn't charged twice and shouldn't be due a refund but in the end I gave up and was like ok whatever.

Low and behold I sent the old one back and got a refund. Now I've kept the size 10 and got it for free due to their screw up.

Have I actually gotten away with this? Seems a bit too good to be true.

Don't underestimate the value of your own time; so don't go out of your way to send extra money to one of the most profitable companies in the world. Seriously, their gain probably doesn't even cover the expense of their staff dealing with the issue.

Disclaimer: I absolutely hate dealing with companies like this; so my POV is definitely influenced by that I in a situation like this would have to do something that I hate just because a company did something slightly in my favour due to them having failed to train their staff right. It simply wouldn't be my responsibility to do anything about.

True enough. And under certain circumstances Apple will even let you keep the old / unwanted item because it's more expensive for them to have it shipped back than to just let it be.

They use watch bands as mistake remedies all the time. I was in an Apple Store and asked to exchange a watch band for a different color. When the rep said I couldn't exchange it because it came in the watch package, they just gave me another one for my time.

Honestly, The $50-$100 watch bands are probably 95% profit. Keep the band and share how great Apple is.

Yeah I tried at least 3 times to tell them but they said the replacement was free so I wold get a refund.

I’ll just enjoy my free braided loop then! Makes me wonder if someone else could use the same trick or whether it was a random oversight rather than a flawed process.

There's a difference between using a "trick" to get free stuff/money, and going out of your way to "correct" a company doing something in your favour; like how one is crime, and the other isn't.

I’d leave it be and enjoy the fact you are quids in. I love it when I get something for free like anybody does lol. My fireplace I bought from Next was £500 and the fire was £290. The fire was faulty and they replaced it and refunded me. I didn’t say anything .

You had to.... buy fire? And it was faulty?

I received a braided solo loop to replace the silicone variant that was causing burns/rashes on my wrist and it is just a wee too tight. Do you guys think they would exchange it for a size up considering it was not purchased?

Veritably an honest scouser

You tried. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
This. You've already tried (multiple times!) to explain the situation, but if Apple's people are too thick to understand, that's on them. Lol

i recently had a similar situation with a leather link band (got a second one for free), but the ninth rep I was dealing with was an "Executive Liason" because I had finally emailed Tim Cook to try to get some help with what should have been an extremely simple issue. The executive liason told me to just keep the extra band. ;)

I'm fairly certain Apple will appreciate the goodwill & nice words from another customer, that they may consider it was since you didn't try to just get one over on them.

I would suggest calling them again and return it. In my case I got 2 iPhone 12 Pro max but was charged only for 1 because of a very similar issue with their logistics department. Took me 3-4 phone calls to explain the situation and return it.
