Just a little more than a week after seeding OS X 10.5.7 Build 9J22 to developers, Apple has distributed a new version, Build 9J27, for testing. World of Apple reports on the release and republishes the seed notes, which reveal ten changes since the last release and ask developers to focus their testing efforts on over twenty wide-ranging focus areas.

Changes since the last developer seed include fixes for several issues with preference panes, MobileMe and iCal syncing, partitioning, and Time Capsule and FileVault backups.

This will be out before Monday, because the Mac Pros need the firmware inside 10.5.7 for the 4870 card.

The only complaint I have is trying to use Apple's X11 for running GIMP and the occasional browser plug-in system hard lock.

And I'm saying, since there are already display Mac Pros in Apple Stores, what's stopping the Mac Pros from having a special build of 10.5.6 like the MacBook Air did with 10.5.1?
Quite true, the website does make it seem like you need 10.5.7 for the 4870 but then again that's the retail model since 10.5.6 retail doesn't have those drivers.

Apple revised the page for the standalone 4870 to say that it requires only 10.5.6. It's unclear whether the original 10.5.7 claim was a typo or if they're covering their tracks.

From http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/03/06/apple_ready_with_second_beta_of_mac_os_x_juno.html:

Mac OS X 10.5.7 was also publicly mentioned on Apple's online store as a prerequisite for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for owners of previous generation Mac Pros. After the blunder was widely reported, Apple changed the page to indicate that the card required 10.5.6, which is actually the case for the just announced Mac Pro, which will ship with a custom milestone of 10.5.6 that includes the appropriate driver support.

I hope they fix the webkit issues with the new MBP and the general battery wonkiness.

Given the size of 10.5.7, and the massive updates we seen so far, I think this confirms how pre-mature and generally low quality Leopard was.

I am glad Apple is focusing on quality for Snow Leopard. The code base really has gotten away from them. Let's hope the same process is happening for iTunes, which is rapidly becoming a buggy mess.

But I welcome 10.5.7, and hope Apple takes their time and gets it very, very stable.

Does this mean anything to the people awaiting their iMacs with the ATI 4850 card?

Seems like a good step for the people waiting that 5.7 get released so that their iMacs will work with the 4850.

There is absolutely no reason why Apple could not ship the new Mac Pro with 10.5.6 and the driver included. In fact it is normal they ship "custom" software combinations. OS X 10.5.7 is however required if one updates an older Mac Pro with the said ATI graphics.

Now that is fact and only thing that makes 100% sense with whole thread.

Do those Mac Pros have the ATi card? Probably not if the drivers aren't there.

Without drivers, the machine will still boot and display, but you'll be limited to 1024x768, because the OS can't read the monitor info from the card. Also, nothing will be GPU accelerated: the CPU will be doing all the drawing.

I'm thinking of doing a combo update for this one. People have said that combos appear faster afterwards. I'm hoping that will apply even if you've been doing point to point upgrades thus far.

I hear this every time, but from my experience Leopard has been rock solid. One could say that the fact that there are 11 updates to 10.4 show how premature and low quality that release was, but it's just that every OS needs updating. They're all "buggy". Software isn't finished, it's abandoned!

Leopard added more new features and more new functionality than any previous .1 upgrade. Time machine, loads of new mail functions, spaces, quicklook, core animation, new desktop UI, stacks the list goes on... Snow Leopard looks to add a lot under the hood; Open CL, Core Text, Grand Central, new Quicktime framework as well as improvements on the implementation of many of Leopards novelties. The functionality in OSX is extreme and elegant, when Windows is still trying to get the basics right and LINUX is little more than a joke (although unbuntu is getting there). I, for one, am thankful for such an amazing OS in comparison to the competition.

We're getting closer and closer to Snow Leopard guys ;) I just have one question : Who on earth and why would give this news a negative?? I mean when i checked the article on the main page it had like 15 positives and 9 (!) negatives... Wonder why those people gave it a -... meh whatever :p I am as excited as i could ever be and darn i can't wait for it :D:D:D:apple::apple::apple:
