People are getting paranoid, it is an hash not an image scan.

Whether a hash or an image, whether directly by law enforcement or a private company acting as an adjunct of LE, whether there are safety checks or triggers built into the process or notan uninvited scan is still warrantless surveillance and a proof of concept of how easy it will be to expand the use of this tech when public push comes to private shove.

Doing the wrong thing for a laudable reason is still doing the wrong thing.

A couple of years ago, Apple seemed terribly concerned about being forced to make cancerous golden LE keys but here they have, albeit with a couple of intermediate steps, non binding statements, and with terrible initial transparency, introduced essentially that.
