Apple today seeded the fifth beta of OS X 10.10.4 to developers and public beta testers, approximately two weeks after releasing the fourth OS X 10.10.4 beta and two months after releasing the first OS X 10.10.4 beta. OS X 10.10.4 has been in testing since mid-April, following the early April release of OS X 10.10.3, which included the new Photos for OS X app.

The new beta, build 14E33b, can downloaded through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store or through the Mac Developer Center.

OS X 10.10.3 brought several consumer-facing changes including the new Photos for OS X app, a redesigned emoji picker, and diversified emoji, but OS X 10.10.4 appears to be an under-the-hood update that brings performance enhancements and bug fixes.

Thus far, OS X 10.10.4 betas have not included outward facing design changes or feature additions, but the last beta introduced a significant behind-the-scenes update that may improve networking performance for users who have experienced issues with OS X Yosemite.

Discoveryd, a somewhat problematic networking process that has been linked to multiple bugs in OS X 10.10, was removed in favor of the older bug-free mDNSresponder.

It is not clear when Apple plans to release OS X 10.10.4 to the public, but the fact that we've now received five betas suggests we may be nearing the end of the beta testing period.

They really need to add a throttle for Photos services bandwidth usage. Its a good idea but they need to cap it. I have had more calls from friends and family complaining they there internet is so slow or unusable. So far every time its because of Photos uploading in the background consuming all the bandwidth. I didn't see any setting in EL Capitan Beta or in this one. Im hoping they do something with that soon.

Does anyone know if you can install 10.11 b1 over one of these 10.10.4 betas? Has anyone done this without issue?

Just turned OFF Google DNS, and went back to my ISP's DNS settings, and it's coming in full speed. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya....

Update, 200Megs in, and it is back to a crawl.... :-(

I'm a rolling stone.

About to install it this way, as I always updated and never reinstalled OS X from the very beginning (of OS X 10.0.0b)

I am tired of these WIFI issues in 10.10.X, hope El Capitan is much better.
Just last night WIFI disconnected(Full bars-manually turned Off/On 4 times in a row!

I am part of the public beta testing for Mac, but not iOS. Does anyone know if updating to these latest betas (which removed Discoveryd) for my Macs will help with my networking/connectivity issues even though I'm not able to get to the public beta (with Discoveryd removed) for the AppleTV and iPhone?

EDIT: Also, are there ways to turning off/power on devices in a specific order to help propagate these changes across the devices?

Stability, stability, stability. For me 10.10.2 was significantly more stable. In fact this feels like the least stable .3 release in years.

How's that been working? I installed it on my extermal drive and it crashes so hard I can't even shut it down correctly. Is it worth trying another install? (It was a fresh install fwiw)
Works great. First tried it on an external which was fine and then decided to run it on my main partition.

I installed it last night and so far it works pretty well. Little bugs here and there, and my battery life dropped a good bit, but nothing drastic. I am mostly at home with my laptop so plugging it in isn't bad at all. Other than that, it just needs to be refined for my machine. (Late 2013 13" Retina)

So my only question is, if I download the Public Beta, will I be able to download the iTunes update for  Music?

Alright, thanks. I'll give it another go.

Most likely, 10.10.4 will ship when the iTunes update is ready. You'll have no issues upgrading.
