For a first beta, I have to say that 11.3 is so far the smoothest, most fluid feeling version of the software I have ever experienced.

I got the screen asking if I want to use iCloud messages to keep messages in the cloud. I clicked ok and saw a progress bar going across backing things up.
However, now going into iCloud settings - the Messages slider is in the off position

Very smooth here too (on my X)

Maybe Apple can come out with "iOS Professional" version where is leaves out all this emoji, Animoji, iMessage stickers apps, etc.

Or you could just ignore the features you don’t want? You know, like you’ve been doing in OSX for over a decade.

OSX had iWork, but it also had iLife. It had iChat video conferencing, but it also had Photo Booth.

Animoji is not the first “fun” feature Apple has ever shipped. They have a long history of doing that.

I can’t figure out if my messages are syncing to icloud. There is no section like before that showed sync progress. And when I try my other devices like my iPad. I don’t see any messages from my iPhone. Before when I beta tested the messages in the cloud feature. Whatever messages I had on my phone would show on my other devices. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

I'm so incredibly pumped to see what comes from the software authentication support for HomeKit. Really hoping we see a number of manufacturers jump on board now thats in place.

The timing makes me think Belkin and other partners wouldn't have been too tightly consulted around timings too given Belkin just released a hardware bridge to enable support with HomeKit. I find the timing of that odd particullarly given we knew the feature was coming.

Anyway HomeKit + Messages in iCloud make this a pretty exciting release to me.

Any word on the possible dark mode that was rumored for 11.3?
Doesn't really seem like anything like that was rumored.

I believe that's just called not using those things.

I've been wrong about this before - but it appears that the memory management has improved here. Anyone else?
[doublepost=1516828765][/doublepost]OMG - one thing that makes this feel "SMOOTH" is that the stupid haptic feedback when sliding up to get to the home screen is G.O.N.E.
Hopefully it stays that way. I imagine this will save a decent amount of battery life was well.

There will be regrets with the "business chat."

I can see it now, someone demanding that Lowes give them a 50% off coupon via chat. Keyboard warriors think negotiation via internet is demanding discounts and lower prices. You'd never do that in person, so don't type it kiddo.

Wow! This looks like an action-packed release. Excited to finally get iCloud messages and battery insights/control, and business chat seems like a great idea. But I’m most intrigued by the changes to ARKit. Really wanna see what devs do with the new AR verticality. Bringing signs and posters to life could be huge for marketing, utilities, social and obviously games. Can’t wait to see the new apps this inspires!

Ooh, and if the changes in the Health app help lead the industry to develop real solutions for medical records, it could be a healthcare revolution. Eager to see what that leads to as well!

Same here, just checked my settings and the slider was off. Its a beta <shrug>

Does anyone know if the battery insights & controls apply to iPads? I hope so.
Won’t now until those functions are implemented in a later release.

I no longer get T-Mobile Wifi Calling enabled in the menubar. Reset network settings, still the same.
Never mind, it showed up.

Errrrr. How would you implement 3D Touch without hardware support?

And while you can achieve some level of face tracking with a camera, which every iPhone since the 4 has had, the X adds infra-red and can thus make a 3D model of your face, making the tracking far more accurate. Hence Animoji working far better.

A long press

I like that they’re introducing new Animojis. The skeleton and lion are standouts.

They kinda missed an opportunity over the holiday season to introduce seasonal emoji that are only around for a few months. I had fun playing with Animojis with my nieces and nephews at each of my seven Christmases, but it woulda been great if they’d had a snowman, elf, nutcracker or even a Santa to mess around with. I hope they take advantage of fun, limited-time seasonal Animoji moving forward, maybe 1 or two per time period (admittedly some of these are a stretch):
- Easter: chick, bunny, egg
- Earth Day: flower, fish, etc.
- 4th of July: Statue of Liberty
- Halloween: jack-o-lantern, ghost, Frankenstein, witch, pirate, hobo (jk), sexy nurse (jk), Trump (jk)
- Thanksgiving: turkey, cranberry
- Winter holidays: snowman, elf, nutcracker, reindeer
- annual Star Wars release: storm trooper, Wookiee, Yoda

What did I miss? Any other holidays or seasonal ideas?

Another change to the health app - make BMI a derived entry instead of an entered one. Height does not change, weight does, so BMI can be tracked right along with weight. No harder than averages and would be great addition.

Eh same reason Force Touch only came to 6S (because “hardware” limited it from the 6). Sure it probably could be used on other devices (like the app you mentioned) but Apple has always had a habit of limiting features to the newest devices because: business and marketing.
Apple has a habit of doing things right or not doing them at all. Allowing Animojis on phones that don’t have FaceID would absolutely wind up being a lower quality, less responsive experience and limit what Animoji can/should be on good hardware.

No need to assume bad intent on Apple (or any company’s) part when there are obvious explanations like cost, available technology and quality control.

Oh wow! It's got more emojis. On that side of things, I'd be more excited to mow my grass with a pair of scissors.
