Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming iOS 12.1.1 update to its public beta testing group, one day after seeding the same beta to developers and two days after the release of the iOS 12.1 update.

Beta testers who have signed up for Apple's beta testing program will receive the iOS 12.1.1 beta update over-the-air after installing the proper certificate on an iOS device.

Those who want to join the beta testing program can sign up on Apple's beta testing website, which gives users access to iOS, macOS, and tvOS betas.

The iOS 12.1.1 update introduces some significant improvements to the FaceTime interface, and it re-adds the feature that's designed to let you take a Live Photo while on a FaceTime call.

In iOS 12.1.1, FaceTime features a reworked bottom bar that includes quick access buttons for muting a call and flipping the camera. Sliding up on the bottom bar brings up additional options with conversation participants.

Previously, FaceTime users were required to tap on three dots to access a secondary menu with these features.

The update also includes a new option in the Apple News app that lets you hide the side bar if desired.

Holy cow! Apple REDUCED the number of steps to do something?? They've been really good at hiding things away and then requiring multiple steps to do stuff that used to be front and center the last few years.

Glad they’re making it easy to flip the camera in FaceTime again. That was a huge pain with kids bouncing back and forth.

Insane they moved it into a menu at all!? One of the most useful features is flipping the camera, and they moved it because why??? Whomever did that should be fired, they clearly have no idea about useful interface design

I can't believe they fixed the camera flip in FaceTime! I'm so glad. We ALL hated the way it was implemented in iOS12. I never imagined they'd fix it that fast. That's great news.

Agree completely. I was surprised at how unpolished it is. I even found a couple of glaringly obvious bugs. Such as if you have two devices registered, Facetime correctly sends invite to both devices but it sees both devices as separate users in the call. So person accepts on device 1, it lists that person again for their second device in the call as "waiting to accept."

How can this not be noticed in the months long beta??

Not unpolished, works great. There are some interface issues that are/will be addressed.

I agree...this beta fixes this interface issue.

I noticed duplicates at first group chat. It does not have a finished look, at least for me. Did not experience the wow factor whatever that means, I've seen better put together video chats. This is my personal opinion.

I'm now on the 12.1.1 beta (which is what this thread is about), but whilst I was on 12.1 Siri would frequently go deaf. I don't use "Hey Siri" but asking her to do anything was often met with silence. I assume if I had a more modern phone she could have tried lip-reading using FaceID :)

I have a shortcut that takes some speech until a short pause, then translates it. The shortcut would recognise that I'd stopped talking when I did, but then say that the input was "" and hence the translated output was also "". I haven't been able to reproduce this since I got 12.1.1.

Anyone see the random restarts / panics on iPhone XS Max go away with this release?

Not at all on 12.1, but the beta 12.1.1 is ridiculous! I can’t speak a new Siri shortcut without the recording pop-up disappearing and my command goes unsaved.

My theory as to why they hid the camera flip button was that they wanted to clean up the interface as much as possible for group calls. Maybe they figured they wanted to maximize the space for all the simultaneous floating heads. I dunno, but perhaps they overthought the problem.

They should implement the Android way of flipping cameras: just shake the phone a couple times and it switches.

Basically fixing what they broke with FaceTime in iOS 12! No idea why they thought it was a good idea to remove the flip button and hide it behind a secondary menu....

It has your quintessential minority quota of one Asian and two blacks — haircut of one of which can easily pass as a lesbian (2-in-1!). In line with Emoji with colors. Apple 2018.

    LTE still garbage.
Places where I had full bars with my previous phone are showing 1 bar or "No Service" on my XS.
