Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming macOS Monterey 12.5 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new update coming two days after the release of macOS Monterey 12.4.

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, betas will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences.

There's no word yet on what new features or changes might be included in macOS Monterey 12.5, but if we find anything new after installing the software, we'll update this article.

I expected only 12.5.X updates at this point. Glad they’re still fixing bugs and improving performance!

Still more bugs to fix or are there more features in 12.5? Maybe they are adding support for new Mac models coming soon at WWDC?

Why specifically this one?
Well, it’s likely to be the last and I can skip all the chore of downloading GBs of point updates. .5 will have all the fixes for .1, 2, 3 and 4. Although there might even be a .6 before macOS 13 launches in the fall.

The release notes against what was released today has very little to say what they fix/improve on. Still a 2.7 GB download for M1 Macs.
  • macOS 12.5 beta (21G5027d) - May 18, 2022
  • iOS 15.6 beta (19G5027e) - May 18, 2022
  • iPadOS 15.6 beta (19G5027e) - May 18, 2022
  • watchOS 8.7 beta (19U5027c) - May 18, 2022
  • tvOS 15.6 beta (19M5027c) - May 18, 2022

When was the last time macOS stopped at x.5? Usually they go to x.6 before getting only security updates.

EDIT: I guess I should say "all recent macOS releases" go to x.6 (or x.x.6). Yosemite and earlier went to x.x.5

I hope this year macOS and iOS launch on the same day. Last October, we got macOS Monterey 12.0.1 and iOS 15.1 on the same day.

No surprise but Disk Utility still unexpectedly quits on M1 family Macs when unmounting/group volume erase a external USB-A HDD with a USB-C dongle. Restarts OK.

I think Apple just wants to be done with Monterey bugs, memory leaks and all and move on to Mammoth macOS 13
Then they should dedicate the appropriate resources to doing so which has not been the case. I have machines lagging at 11.6.6 and I’m beginning to think I should have left my M1 and 2016 MBP on Big Sur as Monterey has been quite the CF since day one.

Nothing, but nothing stands in the way of the Keynote. Some developers think bugs are just a way of life. We know for a fact they they are just the result of not spending the time to get things right.
