I am already starting to play wth Raspberry Pi units to replace my ageing OSX servers.
LOL! There is a huge performance different. Just huge.

I use my pi to simulate performance on overloaded, shared servers. I’d like it because it runs even slower. Makes things easier to debug. You are not going to get anywhere near the performance of macOS.

I love my raspberry pi, just not for the performance.

Oh I understand that.
But they will make good DHCP/DNS servers for home as well as print servers.

As I say its a start.
After that will come Intel NUCs to do web services, VPN, FTP and media.

If that's what you need a server for, it should work great! 😀 Sounds like a Mac was overkill there.

For what it's worth, I run a web server (including PHP, etc) and SQL server (MariaDB, I think) on my Pi to test my websites. When it's fast on the Pi, it should be fast on a VPS. (MariaDB can be slower on the VPS, though.)

It's a great home server, it's just a bad GUI desktop. The most recent Pis are probably better.

2009 and a 2011 Mac mini, surplus to other requirements.
2009 needs to be stripped down and the heat sinking redone.
2011 just had a 1TB SSD fitted into it

But I am expecting that their lives are not too much longer hence the gentle shift.

OSX server was an easy way to learn.
