Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming tvOS 11.3 update to its public beta testing group, one day after providing the beta to developers and a few days after the release of tvOS 11.2.5, a minor bug fix update.

The tvOS 11.2.5 public beta can be obtained by going to the Settings app on the Apple TV and navigating to the Software Updates section under "System." "Get Public Beta Updates" will need to be toggled on, and once it is, the Apple TV will download the beta software.

tvOS 11.3 introduces support for AirPlay 2, allowing the Apple TV to be added to the Home app as part of a HomeKit setup.

With AirPlay 2, you can play music on multiple Apple TVs in different rooms, and when AirPlay 2 officially launches, that same functionality will extend to other AirPlay 2 devices like HomePod and AirPlay 2 compatible speakers.

Other new features in tvOS 11.3 include enhancements to Match Content support, automatic frame rate switching on the fourth-generation Apple TV, and automatic mode switching for AirPlay video sessions.

AirPlay 2 also include those improvements:

* Faster buffeting speed, so that content starts playing more quickly.
* Much longer buffer, which improves stability and makes seeking more responsive.
* Applications can be routed to different outputs. So you can take a phone call while music keeps playing on your AirPlay target.

I wonder if this eventually means I can play 4K content from my iPad to the ATV but I am not holding my breath for this...

Why can’t I turn on the ATV with Siri?
Why can’t I turn on the ATV with my  Watch?
Why can’t the ATV turn on and play music when I arrive home?
Why can’t.....ahhh, never mind.

I don’t want to turn my tv on. I just want to listen to Apple Music. I don’t want much.
I used to be able to listen to all of my music in iTunes, with iTunes Match, using the iTunes Remote app with the 3rd gen  TV.

You can turn the Apple TV on with your watch, I do it all the time with the remote app.

What good does that do if you can’t play music? Without turning on your television? I shouldn’t need to turn my TV on just to listen to music. With the actual Apple TV remote app, that doesn’t exist for the watch, I can turn on the Apple TV and continue playing music. Can’t do that with the iTunes remote app that is on the watch.

Why would you turn off your ATV?

[doublepost=1516967215][/doublepost]Does anybody know if this Beta contains any Dolby Vision tweaks or updates, Sony recently release a Dolby Vision update that does not work with the Apple TV on another thread i read this Beta updates the Dolby Vision Firmware. Hopefully this is the case.

Frame rate matching on the 4th generation TV is a turn up, when they added to 5th generation I thought we’d been left in the cold.

Tested with Infuse and a BD rip and 24fps finally!

Stop being so lazy and just use the remote control! :) :) :) Such first world problems :)

Now if only they will add auto resolution matching.

Surely that will make little difference as either the TV or Apple TV have to convert to the native resolution or am I am naïve?

My TV does a better job at upscaling native source material to 4K than ATV 4K. I also have different picture settings for 4K vs. HD content, which having the ATV upscale defeats. Certain functions of my TV are disabled for native 4K, that I use with HD sources. Apple locking us into one resolution output regardless of source is limiting on most displays, and it should be an option. As a result my ATV 4K stays in 1080p most of the time, unless I specifically decide to watch a 4K movie for maximum impact, and then it remains a 10 step process to change into and back. Heck I wouldn't even mind so much if I could just tell Siri to change into the native resolution I want to use.

Any idea what's taking so long to implement Single Sign On for more cable providers? I have Verizon FiOS, not really a minor player, and it's annoying to periodically have to re-authorize the cable channel apps. Why can't I just tell AppleTV my FiOS sign-in information and it tells the apps for me? This seems like a very basic usability enhancement.

Blame Verizon. They haven't implemented the SSO feature into their app.

Support for Sony’s “light” Dolby Vision profile that requires the source device do most of the Dolby Vision processing.
Sweet this is what i need currently have the current Dolby Vision Update but its for streaming only. Once this is released i will buy a 4k apple TV.

In the same boat, I believe it's up to verizon to support it and they for some reason don't want to. I was so excited when this feature was first announced, now so let down :(

Agreed! But... I strongly suspect the issue is not so much Apple dropping the ball as it is the providers and individual channels not really wanting to play. As with Pay, it's likely about tracking users... and if all the stations get is an authorization code they won't be able to correlate individual viewing habits.

I think it has more to do with Verizon not wanting to support alternatives to renting their cable boxes.

Anybody else notice that the play button doesn’t work anymore. Both on my 4K and 4.
Yes. I was having that problem last night watching Netflix and running on the treadmill. I had to play/pause by clicking the remote touchpad. The play/pause button was not working at all.

4th Gen Apple TV.
