Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming tvOS 12 update to its public beta testing group, giving non-developers a chance to try out the new software ahead of its fall public release.

The first beta of tvOS 12 available to public beta testers corresponds with the second tvOS 12 update made available to developers. Developers have had access to tvOS 12 since June 4, when Apple introduced new versions of tvOS, iOS, macOS, and watchOS at WWDC.

The tvOS 12 public beta can be obtained by going to the Settings app on the Apple TV and navigating to the Software Updates section under "System." "Get Public Beta Updates" will need to be toggled on, and once it is, the Apple TV will download the beta software.

tvOS 12 introduces long-awaited support for Dolby Atmos, and when tvOS 12 launches this fall, iTunes will be home to the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies. As with the launch of 4K HDR, previously purchased content will be upgraded to include Dolby Atmos on all supported titles at no cost.

tvOS 12 brings a new zero sign-on feature that's designed to let cable subscribers watch live channels and on-demand programs that they're entitled to through their cable subscription simply by being logged into their home internet networks. This is something that will be limited to Charter Spectrum users to begin with.

Other tvOS 12 features include autofill passwords from the iPhone to sign into Apple TV apps more quickly, and support for Home Control systems like Crestron and Savant, which will be able to be used to control the Apple TV. Apple also plans to make the Apple TV Remote a default option in Control Center on iOS devices, and there are new aerial screensavers created with help from the International Space Station.

tvOS 12 will see a public launch this fall, and until that time, will be limited to developers and public beta testers as Apple works out bugs and other kinks.

Time to test out that Dolby Atmos support!

tvOS seems like a safer thing to try an early beta version of compared to macOS and iOS.

I do not know how many times I've seen Apple misquoted on this:
iTunes will be home to the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies, with Apple offering upgrades for all purchased iTunes content
APPLE 2018 WWDC KEYNOTE: "And this fall iTunes will be bringing you the largest collection of Atmos content anywhere, and just like with 4K HDR your iTunes libraries will be upgraded to include Dolby Atmos on all supported titles for free."

If a title in iTunes has a Dolby Atmos track available, it will be upgraded. Apple is most certainly NOT upgrading every single title w/Atmos! That would go beyond what the studios are doing and providing to iTunes.

I think it's easy to assume that the the audience that they are writing this for has a bit of an inference that it's the titles that actually support the function, rather than the entire library, but I can see where you are coming from, and it is a valid point.

Assuming also leads to Assu Mema. Which is latin for ... I don't know the rest of the quote.

Yes, I did not mean to imply it was all titles. I'll update the wording.

The VUDU app has a ton of Atmos movies that will work once your ATV has it enabled. Of note, the VUDU app, for now, will be the only way to rent or buy Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos Disney owned films in full 4K glory. Since Apple has determined that, while they happily charge a premium to their customers for the hardware they sell, they WON'T for movies in iTunes. Disney wants more $$ for 4K versions of their films. Apple won't pass that on to customers to make a choice. So, they let those customers willing, give their money to Wal-Mart (who owns VUDU)

Great leadership guys.

I'd disagree, only because uninstalling / reverting back to a released version of the OS is much more difficult on AppleTV than on Mac or iPhone.

Got the TVOS12 today. Single sign on works for the most part with Mediacom cable service automatically. A couple needed going to their website with the activation code but none required actual signing on with the cable provider itself. I like that.

I'll check Atmos support later today, so far none of the movies I already own have Atmos.

Haven't used Vudu on the ATV, does it allow for purchases on the ATV or do you have to do that elsewhere?

Alright, fairly certain I saw the setting last time I browsed my Apple TV 4Ks settings but when I just looked, nothing there under Software Updates to toggle. I've restarted twice.

Any suggestions?

Update: The bedroom Apple TV (4th gen) has the option. :( What gives?

There is no Atmos on iTunes Movies yet!
Some say that, but its fake.
I have dev beta 2 and Atmos setup! Have jumanji, bladerunner and all other movies that should support Atmos. None have Atmos for now just PCM not bitstream.
Xbox, Blu-ray all have Atmos working at my cinema so no Apple TV is not updated with Atmos title yet

That's not true. They don't display Atmos by Dolby Vision at the title page, but once the movie is playing, I got my receiver showing its receiving an Atmos signal and it's playing Atmos.

So far it seems fairly stable, though I don't see a lot of difference. Perhaps it really is going to be "about about stability"? :)

That said, there is one gripe I have. With 600+ movies and a 60" TV I should be able to browse through more than 8 movies at a time.

I know that the title don´t show Atmos, but i have the titles that should have Atmos, so why do i get only PCM and not Atmos ???
I have Atmos reciever and Atmos is enabled in Apple TV 4K.
What movie do you play with Atmos from iTunes ??
My Samsung BluRay 4K and Xbox One X does do Atmos so it´s not my setup that is wrong, i have a Pioneer SC LX reciever with DTS-X, Atmos 4K HDR.. Not a cheap crap system :D

Not doing it for me either after 2 restarts. Are the dev beta 2 and public beta 1 different builds?
You say self you don´t det Atmos ?
Is that only Public Beta that have Atmos ? I will try my other Apple TV4K and install the public beta on that one and try
[doublepost=1530000613][/doublepost]Tried Public Beta OS 12 on my second Apple TV 4K and no Atmos either on Bladerunner 2049, Kong Skull Island, Jumanji, Transformers.
So NO it doesn't work. If you say it work get me proof !! Theres is like 1 video on YT that says it work and he record over his reciever so fast that you need to pause the video to see that it shows Atmos! But how hard is it to have BluRay, Xbox running in background with Atmos :D
So i say it again there is no movies with Atmos so far!

I was able to get Dolby Atmos from the Vudu app. I tested with Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman movies.
