New Features

  • A Shared Admin in a Home is now able to pair/add Matter Accessories. (106449382)

Known Issues

  • When a manual software update is attempted on a Matter accessory with an available update, Home might not indicate that the update has been requested and continue to indicate an update is available. (104902918)
Workaround: Check the Software Update pane in Home Settings at a later time, as the update might be taking place in the background.
  • Shared Admin pairing will fail if Home hubs are running pre-tvOS 16.5 beta software. (105204882)
Workaround: Update tvOS devices to tvOS 16.5 beta.
  • Software updates for Matter accessories might be offered again even though the update already completed successfully. (106768113)
Workaround: Restart your HomePod and Apple TV devices.
  • Pairing will fail if Shared Admin tries to perform the first pairing of a Matter accessory in a Home. (107073942)
Workaround: Let the Home owner perform the first Matter accessory pairing and subsequent pairings from Shared Admin will work.

It may not even be part of iOS 17 since its only a rumor. I wouldnt get your hopes up yet.
Though I think it may happen to avoid lawsuits from the European Union antitrust regulators and the DoJ Antitrust Division. There has been some rumors in the past Apple has been testing the ability to run multiple app stores to comply with legal demands.

This topic is not related to anything iOS 16.X so have to wait for June's WWDC giving more information on whats next. But yes seems to be one of the few things they can just do to remove being badgered by various parties with iOS 17, and presently there is zero info.

What? No 16.4.1? Wasn't expecting a point update. iOS 16 should be reaching eol soon.

This is something people like to say every year, but no. Development on iOS 16 doesn't necessarily stop just because iOS 17 is six months away.

No, I’m impatient lol. Especially when the new .0 release is announced, the public beta is usually a month out and I’ve been running the dev beta right after the WWDC keynote since iOS 5 😂
Oh wow! You've been doing for years! I started doing it with iOS 7 and I've run the first .00 dev betas ever since

The beta might add:
  • Apple Card Savings Account
  • iMessage Contact Key Verification
Heard about the account, any info on how iMessage Contact Key Verification will work?

Edit.. found this:

iMessage Contact Key Verification

Apple pioneered the use of end-to-end encryption in consumer communication services with the launch of iMessage, so that messages could only be read by the sender and recipients. FaceTime has also used encryption since launch to keep conversations private and secure. Now with iMessage Contact Key Verification, users who face extraordinary digital threats — such as journalists, human rights activists, and members of government — can choose to further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend. The vast majority of users will never be targeted by highly sophisticated cyberattacks, but the feature provides an important additional layer of security for those who might be. Conversations between users who have enabled iMessage Contact Key Verification receive automatic alerts if an exceptionally advanced adversary, such as a state-sponsored attacker, were ever to succeed breaching cloud servers and inserting their own device to eavesdrop on these encrypted communications. And for even higher security, iMessage Contact Key Verification users can compare a Contact Verification Code in person, on FaceTime, or through another secure call.

Getting back on topic, :) I don't see much more changes in iOS 16.x versions. iOS 16.5 may mostly be bug fixes by the time it releases in mid-May 2023.
There is a modem firmware regression for iPhone 13 Pro Max from 2.55 down to 2.54.01 for example.

16.4 seems like a really solid release so far. Hopefully a sign of good things to come.
This new beta cycle is indeed up to point of further resolution of some issues instead of adding features. Safari 16.5 is back showing AV1 experimental features, but still not really mentioned in notes. Consider that further out.

(I’d love this but I know a lot of devs will be unpleased as this is something they like to keep to themselves lol)

Not really. I just don't want my app judged based on a beta OS's warts.

This release also quietly added 5G support for apparently every “Generic” carrier. I saw some specific mvnos and telcoms mentioned, but mine wasn’t one of them and now I have 5G on that carrier when I didn’t before.

Well no one can judge your app in the App Store if they are running beta software so…
They can't review, but I've seen word spread about instability in apps triggered by defects in the OS anyway. Seems to be a hard thing to go through. Some limits on who can sign up just so they can understand what they're signing up for make a lot of sense to me.

Ok so I'm not a developer at all and the only code I've ever written was copied verbatim from teaching websites and so forth. I mean I'm in the industry but why was 16.5 pushed out to me last night I'm wondering? I swear I didn't download it via a link visited in Safari or anything. I want to feel special but am I really that special? Idk, I had some baller Apple gear three years ago but now my AMD Radeon Pro 5700 8GB GPU in my iMac like won't even work for me. I think it only works for CAD engineer programs. Seriously there is so little information about my iMac on the internet it's like the Men in Black showed up and flashed their little wands and it's like it was never even made. What's ironic is that here I am with an EOL GPU but them the system has a 10gbps internet connection device and we're like 3 years still from having that in my neighborhood so I mean it's like Fred Flintstone meets the Jetsons.

I think the only reason why I got access to 16.5 is because my boss got me these dual Cadillac cell phone plans which to me is kind of silly because the only reason why a mobile would need heavy lifting like this is if you run around the sky-scrappers of New York city and also run around underground beneath the city but then back pocket the AT&T plan for global coverage. I never leave my apartment lol.
