Apple today seeded the first betas of upcoming iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 updates to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to try out the software ahead of its release. The public iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 betas come a day after Apple released the betas for developers.

Public beta testers can get the beta by opening up the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the "Beta Updates" option, and toggling on the iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 Public Beta. Signing up on Apple's beta testing website is required.

iOS 17.2 adds the Journal app designed to let iPhone and iPad users record their daily activities and thoughts. Apple offers prompts that can be used as inspiration, and journal entires can be outfitted with images, voice recordings, location tags, and more.

Collaborative playlists are now available in Apple Music so you can create playlists that multiple people contribute to, and there's also now a Favorites playlist that has all the music you've favorited. Stickers can be used as tapback reactions in the Messages app, the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro models can now be set to a new Translate function, and Apple has implemented support for iMessage Contact Key Verification.

There are new Weather and Clock widgets, tweaks to the TV app, updates to Message syncing across devices, new Memoji options, and more, with the full list of features we've found so far available in our iOS 17.2 beta features article.

Apple has also released new public betas of tvOS 17.2 and watchOS 10.2.

I'm sure one day it will be a nice app. Apple likes to slow roll their features. Look how long it took them to allow you to crossfade songs. And when they finally do release a feature that should have been there out of the gate, they'll tell you about how magical it all is.

What is the point of having both developer betas and public betas, now that anybody can get either of them with a different checkmark in the settings? It's the same build, just a few days/hours apart.

The only thing raining on the parade I initially had when I first saw this at WWDC is the fact it won’t be on the Mac. And I see it’s not on iPad either which is a shock to me.

As some other people mentioned, it’d be nice to be able to bulk import journal entries from Notability and others.

I was really hoping that you'd be able to add expired tickets/passes from the Wallet app in combination with pics, etc. Or that the app would automatically prompt for an 'experience' or something, much like Photos creates video memories. Easy enough to add screenshots and pics manually. Maybe it'll be an addition at some point.

Does journaling app have an additional login. My wife can login my iPhone but I wouldn’t want her to have access to my journal!

the journal app is not completely functional anyone else having issues with it?
In what way is it not completely functional? I’m not having any issues with it. I do wish Apple adds a timestamp for every journal entry you make. Kinda weird that they haven’t included that yet.

The difference is whether you need it early to do actual development that is then tested by users in the public beta. No reason to run developer beta unless you need it as it’s going to be buggier, there is a lag time between developer and public beta where things get changed/fixed.

Yeah….. weird….. but it’ll be updated, I’m sure. 👍🏻
Apple’s design looks more and more like Android and less polished.. i guessthe UX designers going into Apple are either from outside or Apple don’t have a good design language/guideline internally anymore.

Just look at Apple’s human interface guidelines, it has been mostly neglected. Google has multiple iterations material and Microsoft and other companies are coming out with their own design guidelines as well.

SwiftUI has also removed a lot of the UI design conventions and given developers a lot more flexibility… some for better but some for worse.

So not surprising
