For anyone with the beta handoff function on the HomePod, what do you think of it? It's nice but part of me liked the "old" way it was working. You would just bring your phone near and the audio either jumps from your phone to the Mini or back to your phone without any user interaction at all. With the new U1 handoff, at least for me, it only transfers automatically from phone to homepod. From Homepod back to phone requires you to tap a button. Is there a way to override this I wonder?

Before they even get to that, I'd really like to see them fix the numerous "no service" issues that are still plaguing a lot of people. It really seems like the modem issues are either a low priority for them or Qualcomm is dragging their feet.

Either way, until they can fix the cellular baseband crashing when connected to 5G DSS networks and other LTE networks, 5G DSDS should be priority number 2.
Great post! 12Pro-ATT network... drops 5-10 times a day. I finally shut off WiFi calling to see if that helped. Dropped again. Ugh!!!

Did you try this 14.4 RC yet?

I think the bug may actually be fixed. I know it was not in B2 and my feedback is still marked “open,” but best I can tell my phone is using n2 on AT&T with DSS and the modem is not crashing or resetting.

Edit: I also have a Verizon SIM that experienced the “no service” bug on LTE. I haven’t tried that yet to see if that bug is fixed.

AirTags? I can't think of any other expected announcement that would require a new iOS version.
Maybe they’re expanding some of their services to new countries. Though it really doesn’t need a software update, Apple Pay is officially announced as coming to Israel and Mexico this year (the expansion to Israel was actually announced by a local bank for last year so it should be imminent) and sometimes the rollout of apple pay coincides with the release of a software update. They may also be planning to expand the international rollout of other services such as ECG on Apple Watch or Apple News, which do require a software update.

Apple today seeded the RC version of upcoming iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4 updates to developers for testing purposes, with the new betas coming a week after Apple released the second betas.

iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4 can be downloaded through the Apple Developer Center or over the air after the proper profile has been installed on an iPhone or iPad.

Paired with the HomePod 14.4 beta that is only available to a limited number of testers, iOS 14.4 adds new HomePod mini functionality that takes advantage of the mini's U1 chip.

There are now visual, audio, and haptic effects when songs are transferred from a HomePod mini to a U1-enabled iPhone 11 or iPhone 12. When an iPhone is near the HomePod mini it begins a soft haptic touch rhythm that gets faster and faster as the ‌iPhone‌ gets closer until the interface to transfer a song between the ‌HomePod mini‌ and the ‌iPhone‌ opens.

This functionality will make handoff quicker and more reliable on a ‌HomePod mini‌ and an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, all of which are equipped with U1 chips that let the devices better understand where they are in relation to one another.

In the Workout section of the Apple Watch app on iPhone there's a new "Time to Walk" feature that includes a toggle to "Add Newest Workouts to Watch." This suggests that Apple could be planning to add guided walking workouts in the watchOS 7.3 beta. "Time to Walk Workouts are downloaded when Apple Watch is connected to power and near your iPhone. Completed workouts are deleted automatically," reads the setting. This is not functional in the first beta of watchOS 7.3 and iOS 14.4, but could be activated later.

iOS 14.4 includes a setting to specify a device type for third-party Bluetooth-connected audio devices so that Headphone Audio Level measurements can be taken correctly. Apple tracks headphone audio levels to send alerts if music is playing at a level that has the potential to damage hearing health over time.

iOS 14.4 includes code that suggests Apple will add a warning on iPhones that have had their cameras repaired or replaced with aftermarket components. The warning, which says "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple camera," will let users know that the camera is not a legitimate Apple camera. Apple's full release notes for the update are below:

There's no word yet on when iOS 14.4 will be released, but as release notes are available, the public version could be coming soon.

Well, since the RC (formerly called GM) is out I’d say next Tuesday is extremely likely for a software update release. There hasn’t been one since December 14th and for Apple that’s an extremely long time without releasing any updates.

Whichever is the case, I sure hope this update addresses the limitations on the ability to cast the Fitness+ workout videos to a TV. It’s very annoying not to be able to AirPlay those videos to anything other than the last two Apple TV generations (HD and 4K, that is, which btw is useless since those devices can run the Fitness app natively anyway) and/or not to be able to send video to the TV using an HDMI dongle unless you have one of the last two iPad Pro generations or the latest iPad Air (i.e., only USB-C to HDMI works, not lightning to HDMI).

In all seriousness, Apple's Official Position on the Matter is that there is no issue and you need to contact your carrier. It's crystal clear this is an iPhone issue but Apple's current approach is to send everyone to the carrier.

I am starting to wonder. Is it even possible? From my recollection, "5G coming soon on dual SIM" was claimed by Verizon Wireless, never directly from Apple.
Technically VZW never actually said that. It was posted by someone on the Verizon sub-reddit that a Verizon CSR said it would be coming by end of 2020

I’m surprised Macrumors doesn’t mention whether 14.4 includes the privacy change to IDFA (with a new opt-in for cross app tracking). This is a closely watched feature that will likely generate significant publicity and headlines when it’s added to iOS, especially if Facebook keeps complaining about it.

Can anyone who has 14.4 installed help answer whether it’s included?

Does this finally include the new privacy feature that lets you stop apps from doing cross-app tracking?
This has been a current feature for awhile now.

The feature that FB is ticked about are the notifications users will get the next time they open an app. FB doesn’t want that kind of awareness sent to each user.

But you can already disable all app cross tracking. Settings > Privacy > Tracking.

Is the lock sound fixed? Every time the phone gets charged using the magsafe charger, the lock sound changes.

ive never had a single drop on att. reception is so much better than my old xs max.
The issue I was speaking to and that I assume douglasb7 was referring to is specific to certain areas where AT&T uses DSS to share band 2 with LTE.

In most areas, AT&T has at least one cellular license that gives AT&T dedicated room to deploy 5G NR on band 5 without having to use DSS. Best I can tell, this issue did not present in those markets where DSS is not in use.

Artifacts in HDR photos? Hmmmm they talking about this? Those aren’t mountains, just the sky 😂 noticed this in a few photos while editing this past week in both ProRaw and normal mode.

How about a way to convert an edited pro raw in a jpeg or heic and save space? have to to that manually by importing in photos, edit, export as jpeg or heic, reimport in photos, delete the original raw and sync.
A bit ridiculous

I can’t believe how awful this update has been. Intermittent cellular connectivity and horrible switching from 5G and LTE. So many choppy animations throughout the whole OS. Swiping up to go home or invoking multitasking is dropping frames like crazy. I also had my phone “soft reset” itself and the battery went from 98% to 15%. Also had a few instances of the phone getting hot.

I don’t know if I’m just lucky or what, but these updates are working fine for me on my iPhone and my MacBook. I feel bad for all these issues others are having. Battery life is a little diminished on iPhone but I am hopeful fir this latest rc
