Can somebody tell me what's the point of sub-pixel rendering? Is this a further step towards supplying software to support 4k graphics? I've downloaded the new beta Safari and I certainly haven't seen any improvement in rendering. Indeed, If anything, it's degraded. Some images I looked at look clearer and sharper when viewed in Chrome. So what's going on?

hi everyone

this update to safari was made available for me (not a developer) and I accidentally downloaded it. Now safari crashes all the time. can someone help me downgrade safari? Please
thanks

Apple does not seem to be serious about their browser any more. It was very innovative when it was launched but now I think FireFox and Chrome are way ahead.

That hasn't been my experience. For me, it uses less power and isn't any slower. Then again, I'm on Yosemite and after it becomes stable I'll be moving to WebKit Nightly.

Ahead in terms of what? Safari is way more faster than both of those browsers and uses a lot less energy. I keep Firefox because I need its addons every now and then but I have no use for Chrome.

Wikipedia describes the technology

I guess it's not so noticeable with modern high resolution displays, but certainly on lower resolution LCD screens, it can make text look a lot cleaner.

On MS Windows, they call it ClearType, and it was a marked improvement when they introduced it. There was a cock-up with Office 2013 where it didn't make use of ClearType properly, and text looked dreadful.

Safari 7.1 Seed 1 Freezes and loss of previous page function

Looks like I got the beta version of Safari with the iTunes Update. I'm not a developer. My browser screen freezes. You can enter new URL's and the title bar will change, however the contents of the screen do not. Additionally I use a track pad and the previous page (back motion) does not work as well. As a result I am having to use chrome or firefox until this issue gets resolved. Is there a way to get back to non-beta version?

App Store offered to downgrade my 7.1 seed 1 copy to the release 7.0.5 this afternoon. Other than having to reinstall a few extensions (Adblock, ClickToPlugin, and Save To Pocket), it was a straightforward downgrade.
