Is it just me or are Apple’s macOS names getting worse every year?

They went from clean, global names like Tiger and Leopard to a bunch of US-centric tongue-twisters (Mojave, Ventura, now Tahoe). Half the world can’t even pronounce them properly... I still hear people saying 'Yo-se-might' instead of Yosemite (which, fun fact, was already the nickname for a blue-and-white G3 tower… back when the iMac was Bondi blue, showing Apple actually had a more global focus).

Feels like Apple’s boxed itself into a weird little California tourist brochure. Meanwhile, there are still a dozen cool big cat names they never used. Imagine macOS Lynx, Ocelot, or even Jaguar 2.0. Way easier to say and not tied to one country’s geography.

And let’s be real... they’re a global brand that's manufacturing in China and routing profits through Ireland. The 'California only' naming scheme feels less like heritage and more like a gimmick. At this rate, what’s next - macOS Fresno?

I think it's just you. Apple is based in California, so it makes total sense for them to name their OS's after California landmarks, and showcase the beauty of California with their desktop photos and screensavers. I live in California, love the names, and have been to most of these places. You can always use the numbers instead of the names if you have difficulty pronouncing them - saying 15.6.1 is more accurate than saying Sequoia anyway.

There are plenty of foreign brands Americans can't pronounce properly, so what's the difference? We say it how our language allows us to say it without sounding funny. Steve Jobs was a big cat fan, so they named OS's after them. As for future names, you can look at the names Apple has trademarked, which include Shasta, Redwood, and Mammoth, so expect one of those for macOS 27. Here's a plot of locations for existing OS's, and future predictions.

funny, I was just coming on to say I am pretty pleased with the last couple of betas, using 9 and it feels like they've turned off the ultra debugging/profiling stuff (or fixed and/or optimised, how the hell should I know). I have an obscene amount of 3rd party software and tweaks etc installed as well. Finally this beta of Ice has been the most reliable menu bar wrangler out of Ice, Bartender and Barbee for the last few betas, and AlDente is fine.

Perhaps most surprising to me is that Spotlight has actually brought me back from Raycast now which I was using for at least a couple years. But then they started hawking a Pro subscription and of course crammed AI features therein. It could all be more or less avoided, but Apple putting clipboard history, the ability to search within apps and a pseudo-extensions equivalent with app intents or whatever (that could be really cool once supported by more apps) has won me back. Oh, and the file search appears to actually work now? Interesting choice, Apple! A highly pleasing development. (Hopefully they break it for the GM). Fr tho, considering +Space is my portal to basically everything not CLI (big fan of Warp terminal) rejuvenating Spotlight is music to my queer ears. (The less said about Music.app the better. I have deep trauma associated with it and the monster behind the mask, iTunes - but damn if that Automix feature isn't actually ... *whispers* good?)

That's right on the whole guys, I ain't bitchin'. Tempting fate though? Quite possibly....

oh, man...you lost me at wokification.
thank God, someone else said it... name a more tiresome complaint in 2025 (besides complaining about the complaint, wise guys, although I take the point)? I mean I'd rather listen to me whinge for the 500th time about moving iPhone music syncing into the Finder or some **** than witness another "person"'s invocation of the lamest trigger word of the Persecution Industrial Complex with zero relevance or benefit to the topic (besides functioning as a four letter red flag parade)... I mean I don't mind if you want to bleat toxic nonsense about the "woke mind virus" just as long as you do it behind closed doors WITH CONSENTING ADULTS ONLY and don't ram it down the rest of our throats!!!! SO SICK OF THESE P.I.C. HEADS
