Apple today seeded the second betas of upcoming iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 updates to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to try out the software ahead of its release. The second iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 public betas come two weeks after Apple released the first public betas.

Public beta testers can get the beta by opening up the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the "Beta Updates" option, and toggling on the ‌iOS 17 or iPadOS 17‌ Public Beta. Signing up on Apple's beta testing website is required.

iOS 17.2 adds the Journal app, designed to let iPhone and iPad users record their daily activities and thoughts. Apple offers prompts that can be used as inspiration, and journal entries can be outfitted with images, voice recordings, location tags, and more.

Collaborative playlists are now available in Apple Music so you can create playlists that multiple people contribute to, and there's also now a Favorites playlist that has all the music you've favorited. Stickers can be used as tapback reactions in the Messages app, the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro models can now be set to a new Translate function, and Apple has implemented support for iMessage Contact Key Verification.

There are new Weather and Clock widgets, tweaks to the TV app, updates to Message syncing across devices, new Memoji options, and more, with the full list of features we've found so far available in our iOS 17.2 beta features article.

Anyone been using public beta's on their primary device? Was thinking about starting since I have so many bugs with the official releases I thought I might start submitting more feedback? or do they even listen? haha

I would never use any betas (public or private) on your primary device, but you can if its just a "play machine" without any data on it that you wouldn't mind possibly losing.

Did they change the placement of Stickers to not cover the message, and go where Tapbacks have always gone?

You'll never know if they do, and if you can't spend a lot of time providing technical detailed feedback, I wouldn't bother.

However if you are in a hurry to fix a bug, the final RC is usually pretty safe, especially if you wait a day or so to be sure they don't pull it.

It's basically a self Instagram. lol. There's almost nothing to it. Like they reskinned the notes app and changed the icon and called it a day.

That...is almost certainly exactly what they did. Probably not a bad code base to start from actually, they have a lot in common. However I'm not opposed to the idea of a self instagram, it's basically that already. If it gives people a place to do the same thing more privately, great.

Next they'll bring back Ping so people can "Like" your journal entries.

This reads like the Journal app is designed for the iPad too? Is this the case? My iPad is on the current 17.2 beta and I don’t see the journal app.

The journal app is very basic at this point. It has a long way to go before I use it in lieu of DayOne. Deep integration into iOS will probably win me over eventually. I’ve long thought the iPhone should have an activity log, since we do so much in our phones these days, it can give us fine grained detail of our daily activity. I could use that to see where I need to improve my habits or even productivity. It’s all there, scattered across screen time, health, fitness, etc.

Yes. I use the PB on my one and only iPhone. I fully acknowledge that it’s not completely safe, but I’ve been doing it for years, since before it was officially allowed.

I’ve honestly had no irreversible problems, and in the last year or two, the PBs have been remarkably stable. Not problem-free, but fine. I submit bug reports regularly, and some things are really annoying, but hardly anything unusable. The worst problem I’ve had in recent years was that my Apple Music stopped working with one .x version, and it was fixed the next week.

I don’t recommend it for anyone who doesn’t go into it understanding the risks, but it’s fine for me.

As for whether they listen to the bug reports, yes, but I only get a direct response every so often. Mostly the issue is fixed in an update, but every once in a while, I’ll get a message asking me to follow up on an issue.

The Journal app is supposed to install with this latest Beta but, like you, it did not install on my iPad.

I'll say it again. A journal app on iOS doesn't make sense. Journaling requires a fair bit of typing and phones are the hardest thing to type on (compared to MacOS). Maybe because there are more people with phones they wanted to release it on phone? I just don't get it.

I would gladly trade in the Journal app and just about everything else planned for 17.2 for a combined digital clock/date/day of week widget and a keyboard with a dedicated number row and predictive text that shows 100% of the time.

Can anyone confirm if the fix for BMW wireless charging is included in iOS 17.2 public beta 2?
That was meant to be fixed with iOS 17.1.1, it’s in the notes about the OS…

There’s even a certain news article that can be shared about it from a site most of us would generally be intimately familiar wkth… 😂👍🏻

OS overall on a 12 Pro seems more responsive from the first beta. Treading in 'Safari seems snapier' waters, but an appropriate and legitimate statement nonetheless 😃

Voice to text and swipe typing make entering text pretty effortless…

Plus you can easily pair a wireless keyboard and even mouse / trackpad with iPhones… and iPads.
