Apple today seeded the second betas of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 to public beta testers, opening up the iOS 16 beta testing process to the general public. Today's beta comes a little over two weeks after the first public beta, and it corresponds with the fourth developer beta.

Public beta testers who have signed up for Apple's free beta testing program can download the second iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 betas over the air after installing the proper certificate from the Public Beta website.

For new features and changes in the second public beta of iOS 16, check out our list of everything new. There are updates to the iMessage edit/undo send features, enhanced Lock screen notification settings, new Home app and CarPlay wallpapers, and more. Apple has also released an ActivityKit beta for developers to test the Live Activities feature.

iOS 16 brings an overhauled Lock Screen with customizable wallpapers, time, and widgets, plus notifications have been updated to roll in from the bottom of the display. Multiple Lock Screens are supported and can be linked with Focus modes.

The Messages app supports editing and deleting messages as well as marking messages unread. SharePlay is no longer limited to FaceTime, so Messages can be used for communication between people sharing content with one another. FaceTime calls can be handed off from one device to another, and the Health app gains a new Medications feature for tracking the vitamins and medicine that you take.

Apple is replacing passwords with Passkeys, and Safari now supports Shared Tab Groups for collaborating. In the Mail app, you can schedule emails, cancel sending, and receive follow-up reminders, and the Maps app supports multi-stop routing.

iCloud Shared Photo Library offers a convenient way to share a photos with family members, and Apple Pay Later will let users pay for Apple Pay purchases in fee-free installments. For the iPad, iPadOS 16 brings a Weather app and a new multi-tasking system called Stage Manager, but it's only for iPads with Apple silicon chips.

There are tons more features in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, with a full rundown available in our dedicated roundups.

There you go. Now you don't have to do it.

10:15PDT It didn't show for me at first, but I backed out and came back and it's downloading now. Something like 1.6GB.

How stable is this, relative to past years? I remember the iOS 13 PBs were awful.

I may roll the dice on tvOS or even iPadOS, but I'm definitely not risking it with iOS.
in my experience, iOS 16 Public Beta on my iPhone 12 Pro Max is significantly more stable than iOS 15 Public Beta.

in the iOS 15 beta apps were broken and i had to go back to stable iOS 14. got iOS 16 PB running on both my iPhone and iPad. all my apps work. the only bug i've encounted so far is on my iPad where the volume in control centre doesn't work and i need to use the physical buttons. animations are bit rough on iPad too. no real problems on iPhone.

i'm happily running the beta on my iPhone but you might have issues depending on what apps you use.

  • Fixed: When attempting to reply to an existing thread of replies, the replies might scroll to an incorrect position. (90407282)

Metal

Known Issues

  • When using the new Metal mesh shaders feature, render pipeline state objects (PSOs) created with a mesh shader stage but without a object shader stage can fail to compile or fail to work correctly on some devices. (89836551)
Workaround: When creating render PSOs with a mesh shader stage, also include a (potentially trivial pass-through) object shader stage.

Deprecations

  • The MTLResource.gpuHandle is deprecated. Use gpuResourceIDinstead, which functions as a replacement. (92862429)

Metal Offline Compiler

Resolved in iOS & iPadOS 16 beta 4

  • Fixed: AppStore TestFlight distribution of apps with Metal Offline Compiler GPU binaries fails and results in validation errors. (93124006)
  • Fixed: Adding a pipeline descriptor that uses MTLLinkedFunctions to a MTLBinaryArchive is unsupported and has undefined runtime behavior. (90776424)
  • Fixed: When using Metal mesh shaders on a device with Apple silicon, object or mesh shaders producing large amounts of output data can result in incorrect rendering and device instability. (93797539)
  • Fixed: When using Metal mesh shaders on a device with Apple silicon, vertex buffers set at indices 29 or 30 can become unset after calling any of these methods: drawMeshThreadgroups, drawMeshThreads, drawMeshThreadgroupsWithIndirectBuffer. (93797408)
  • Fixed: When using Metal mesh shaders on a device with Apple silicon, graphics corruption can occur when emitting a metal::mesh with a large number of primitives and using the viewport_array_index, render_target_array_index, or primitive_culled per-primitiveattributes. (93797184)
  • Fixed: The names of classes in MetalFX headers don’t match WWDC session. (93712694)
  • Fixed: MTLFXTemporalScaler currently only supports an input resolution of ≥ 1280 x 720 and an output resolution of exactly 2x. Creating MFXTemporalScalingEffect with other attibutes returns nil for the object creation. (92913479)
  • Fixed: The MFXTemporalScalingEffect class quits unexpectedly on creation when using an iPad with an M1 chip. (93278732)
  • MetalFX effect outputs aren’t designed to be consumed by the CPU. Outputting to a texture that is read only by the CPU might result in synchronization issues. (91515075)
Workaround: If a CPU reading of the MetalFX output is desired, instead of encoding the MetalFX effect as the last item in a command buffer, encode a dummy blit that consumes the MetalFX output texture (a 1-pixel region blit is fine) in the command buffer. After the command buffer with the dummy blit is finished, reading of the MetalFX effect output texture with CPU synchronizes correctly.
  • App Store TestFlight distribution of apps with Metal Offline Compiler GPU binaries fails and results in validation errors. (95140728)
Workaround: Clients with source access can build app project locally.

MetalFX

Resolved in iOS & iPadOS 16 beta 4

  • Fixed: MTLFXTemporalScaler only supports input resolution >= 1280 x 720 in beta 2. Creating MTLFXTemporalScaler will return nil for the object creation for sizes smaller than 1280 x 720. (95390607)

Starting with macOS 13, iOS 16, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16, if software using Network.framework targets these releases as the minimum OS, the object releases any blocks they captured once cancelled, breaking the retain cycle. As someone who's been burned by betas in the past, I'd say that these have been very solid. Bugs, to be sure, but very capable. If I were on the fence, I'd honestly say - the new features are cool, but not worth if you're risk adverse.

I realize how minor this is, but for me, the coolest upgrade is the fact you can set rotating photos of people as Lock Screen walllpaper/main wallpaper. So every so often, I get a different photo from my photos library of my kids. The weather/calendar on the Lock Screen is pretty neat, but I'm far more excited about how various apps implement it (like that live widget thing they just announced) but no apps can update with ios16 features until the official release in September, so you're limited to just the apple defaults.

Agree with this. You have the plug the phone in while it's connected to wifi for it to search your photos library for cool pictures. I usually charge in my car while driving to work but after plugging in at home it finds and rotates through pictures.

Seems stable enough for me - small quirks here and there

One annoying bug on the first beta was in messages, I noticed many times it would appear that someone was still typing and the ... would stay forever until you closed the app. Is that fixed?
thanks
