Apple today seeded the tenth beta of an upcoming tvOS 11 update designed for the fourth-generation TV, just under a week after seeding the ninth beta and three months after releasing the first beta during the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference.

Registered developers can download the tvOS 11 update by connecting the Apple TV to a computer with a USB-C cable and installing the beta software using iTunes.

tvOS 11 didn't receive a lot of attention at the Worldwide Developers Conference because it's a modest update, but according to Apple's release notes, it does introduce a few new features to the operating system.

tvOS 11 brings automatic switching between light/dark mode based on local time, Home screen syncing options that keep multiple Apple TVs in a household in sync, new background modes and notification support, Focus API improvements, custom sound support, network-based pairing and development support, improvements to Mobile Device Management, and more.

The tenth beta of tvOS 11 most likely focuses primarily on bug fixes and other small refinements, as the first nine betas did. Apple's new tvOS 11 update is available for both registered developers and public beta testers and will see a public release this fall.

Update: There's a new public beta available (tvOS 11 public beta 9) for public beta testers.

It's funny that the most betas ever was for tvOS, which Tim Cook only mentioned one thing for at WWDC.

Apple probably wants to avoid another ATV launch that is plagued with bugs.

Apple how about a tvOS update that includes live NFL games? Something like SundayTicket. And how about licensing some sports game apps for ATV? NFL, MLB, NHL, NASCAR and NBA games apps.

I don't think Apple wants to pay the billions of dollars it'd take to get the NFL rights, and quite frankly I don't blame them. The NFL is on a downward trend. Time to move on from football, its had its hayday but the league and their owners have gotten to be so ridiculous over the past 10 years that it is time to call it quits.

As for bringing sports games to the ATV, that's mainly all on EA and 2k. They hold so many of the licenses that they are the only ones who can make games using the major leagues.

None of those things have any thing to do with apple or tvos. Just like in iOS the content providers make their own apps, not apple. You need to contact those content providers to request they make an app.

Surprises me there is no iOS update yet, or High Sierra for that matter. tvOS gets the honours to come out first this time.

While I get what you're saying, it COULD have something to do with Apple.

After all, they made Apple Music and could do the same with both movies and sports - though it would be expensive as.........

I just wish they would add some sort of passcode to start using the ATV once it’s rebooted (or even the option once it is woken up from standby), in the event it is stolen from a break-in or something, it will give your thief access to a good chunk of personal information, primarily Photos, unless you remove the device from your Apple ID. Also wish they would integrate it into find my iPhone, so it could be remotely locked or wiped. I was hoping that’s what the “improved mobile device management” feature meant but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Also, having a passcode on it and having to “unlock” it would enable it to control access items in HomeKit (such as door locks and garage doors), which it currently cannot do because of the lack of authentication.

There is already a Sunday Ticket app for tvOS, unless I am misunderstanding something.

I’m with you here. At the very least, having a per-approved iPhone or iPad or Mac nearby or on the same network would work well.

But as for HomeKit, the Apple TV only works as a hub to route commands out to different home automation devices, and I’m pretty sure it’s not only because there’s no authentication, but because of the interface capabilities. You can control your devices from your phone or iPad because there are easy to use methods available. Siri, the Home app. As far I can imagine it, trying to offer that ability on the Apple TV would be awkward to use and have limited utility.
