It is a piece of junk as far as I’m concerned. Form over function. Fortunately my Sony Bravia remote uses HDMI-CEC and does a much better job on the TV 4K than Apple’s remote.

How do you close apps?

Use your phone
For me, using the Remote app takes the worst qualities of the Siri Remote, such as the touch pad, lack of physical buttons, and a sudo D-pad, and doubles down on them with touch everything, no physical buttons, and no D-pad at all.

As bad as the Siri Remote is, I really don't get why the Remote app doesn't have at least a D-pad.

turn on reduce motion in accessibility. What you don't like is how the animation is holding onto the icon instead of jumping over to the next tile. That usually makes people happier with motion on. I don't mind having it off and how the animations are more moveable.

There is a huge, mostly aged generation that finds subtle fingertip strokes and tiny non-tactile buttons to be difficult or impossible to maneuver. Methinks that, just like touch-screen computing and lots of “smart home” paraphernalia, simplicity with positive feedback (the click of a button) is much more user friendly for a lot of friendly users.
im 39 and don't mind the motion of the icons with how scrolling is with the remote. I prefer it on the phone app I use it more than anything else. I have a harmony elite and a companion and I still prefer the phone app. I like the quick controls on the Lock Screen. I like having the volume right on it to control my receiver.
Can the remote be improved? Sure. I still prefer touch to physical buttons for left right up and down. But I think apple can make it better with the tech they use in their Magic Trackpad and they should work on the animation on how things move to one another. Still it doesn't bother me like it seems to bother most people in this forum.

So does the physical Apple TV box offer anything different from a smart TV that comes with Apple TV app? Is it just a case of the physical box allows you to access Apple TV if your smart TV doesn't have the app, or are there added benefits like you can download and store purchased programs on the box so you don't have to constantly stream, or you'll always get a more up to date app experience with the dedicated hardware?

Is this the update that stops sending my information constantly to cma-china.itunes-apple.com.akadns.net?
Or do I have to keep that domain blacklisted on my router?

Where’s the 6th gen Apple TV?
Exactly! Just got a Roku tv and the interface is fine, but even my ancient 4th gen Apple TV is smoother and easier to use. And I’m not paying for the 4K Apple TV thats five years old.

Thanks for trying to help, but that doesn't remotely sum up the problems I experience with the Siri Remote.

We don't yet know if there's anything else included in tvOS 14.5 in terms of features because tvOS updates are often minor in scale
Well there is the new improved frame rate matching. Perhaps try reading the comments from the previous beta news stories.

So why is a new AppleTV needed???

I am looking forward to the true 24 fps.

Better gaming support, even faster interface, support for new audio formats, more storage for apps, better remote, etc. I don’t have the 4K fifth gen either, and I’m not paying full price for five year old hardware.

Obvious difference would be reducing delays when running apps and navigating using a A14. It would be cool if the video processing could offer some AI upscaling also. Some seem to think its all about turning the ATV4K into a console. The problem is the consoles play better games than what's on Apple Arcade. Memory doubling would be another thing necessary to load more complex games.

oh well. I enjoy it for the most part. Ill use my harmony remotes here and there but I control most everything from my phone and the remote app.

Something must be wrong with my remote app, keep quitting on me, sure doesnt work like it used to! The one thing its missing is the volume buttons, unless im missing where they are.
its in the quick control if you are playing something and its on your lock screen. If its not pull down control center, force touch on the top right music tab, click control other speakers and tv's and select your appletv.

Question for more under-the-hood experts here: Would it be possible for Apple to create a "Mute" function for the remote via an tvOS and/or firmware update? That's still the #1 basic thing I can't believe they don't have. Yes, I know I can pause, but Mute is pretty basic on every remote ever.

Apple today seeded the third beta of an upcoming tvOS 14.5 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new beta software coming two weeks after Apple released the second tvOS 14.5 beta.

Designed for the fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV, the tvOS 14.5 developer beta can be downloaded onto the ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ via a profile that's installed using Xcode.

tvOS 14.5 brings support for the latest PlayStation 5 DualSense and Xbox Series X controllers, which can be used to play games from the tvOS App Store and Apple Arcade.

Support for the new controllers has also been included in iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, so the latest gaming controller options from Sony and Microsoft are now compatible with Apple's product lineup.

We don't yet know if there's anything else included in tvOS 14.5 in terms of features because tvOS updates are often minor in scale, but the release of tvOS will see Apple begin enforcing its new App Tracking Transparency rules, with developers now required to ask for and receive a user's permission to access their random advertising identifier (known as the IDFA) to track user activity across apps and websites for ad customization purposes.

Going forward, when an app wants to access a person's advertising identifier on tvOS, users will have a prompt with options to "Allow Tracking" or "Ask App Not to Track." Selecting "Ask App Not to Track" will prevent the app's developer from accessing the user's IDFA, and developers will also have to respect the user's tracking preference and refrain from using other invasive cross-app tracking methods.

The main tvOS 14 update released in September brought expanded Picture in Picture support, new HomeKit integration with HomeKit Secure Video cameras, support for multiple Apple Arcade profiles, and more, with details available in our tvOS 14 roundup.

If Apple is willing to market a 6th gen. Apple TV that could send Dolby Atmos to a pair of Air Pod Max earphones I'd eagerly purchase both. If it isn't I don't have any need for either of them.
