Apple needs to keep innovating improving the iphone. Its market share of smart phones is climbing and once the android fad dies, Apple will want to reel those users in.

Apple gains more share in smartphone market
May 5, 2011
By Dan Gallagher, MarketWatch

"In a report Thursday, IDC said Apple ended the first quarter with 18.7% of the global smartphone market — up from 16.1% in the fourth quarter. The growth came as the company expanded its popular iPhone into new carriers such as Verizon Wireless.

Nokia saw its own share of the market slip further, to 24.3% from 28% in the fourth quarter. ..."

Ok but....

Would anyone else rather they focus on the microphone/speaker/things of that nature?

The original iPhone had a great ALS. The iPhone 4 has a pretty good one too, at least for me. It takes 5-10 seconds for it to react to an increase in brightness but does sometimes fail to ratchet down the brightness with a dramatic decrease, although most of the time it works as advertised. That said, it's world's better than the 3G which, for me, didn't work at all.

In my experience the 4 doesn't do anything (see my above post). I think I saw more difference with my 3G than my 4 (at least I think it seemed to do something sometimes. Seriously, my 4 you'd never know auto brightness was turned on at all cause I've never seen evidence of it ever adjusting brightness on its own).

This rumor does not preclude the possibility of Apple reviewing other components for future models.

Apple prototypes many different designs using a wide variety of sample parts from various vendors. It is highly likely that they are looking to improve multiple parts of the phone. My guess is that every single component inside the phone gets scrutinized during the prototype phase and that candidate parts get weeded out during the DVT, EVT and PVT phases.

Not of any real significance, but somewhat interesting (to me, anyway) is that the photo used to illustrate this story is of an iPhone on the Softbank network, and therefore taken in Japan. (Usually the photos we see here on MR are of iPhones on the AT&T network, and now sometimes Verizon.)

No, it isn't. That's the proximity sensor. Otherwise, the screen would never turn on in the dark.

Personally, I'm glad for this. I see it react in the daylight, but I've always thought it was very slow to do so. In the dark, I find myself being blinded by the screen for up to a couple minutes before it finally dims the screen.

My brand new iPhone 4 [black 16GB] adjusts within 2~3 seconds...

i have a question i am new to this forum and don't know how to start new thread.......

i got a text message that says: AT&T Family Map:Security Message-you can be located by the following numbers......if i turn off in settings... location services... does that turn the family map off so i cant be tracked?

we have a family plan and she is head of it... can they still track me...i think this is violating my privacy....i'm not a kid i'm a grown man and i am under 2 year contract

Not entirely sure why this is on page 1 ?

Never got on with auto brightness anyway - seemed to be too slow, or not work much at all,
SBsettings (jailbroken) has always worked pretty well for adjusting brightness when needed:

True. But I heard that it is a battery hog.

It's my understanding that the brightness is set once when you slide to unlock.

The brightness does not adjust during your session, but it will once the phone is locked and unlocked and used again.

My phone still has the prox sensor issue.. after 4.3.1 and yeah. Oh well, I don't talk on the phone that much anyway. It's not AS bad as it was.
