“ChatGPT and other similar AI services are not available in China, so Apple needs to find an alternative.” I thought most is done on-device so that’s why at least the 15P is needed?

It's OK for Apple to give up AI market in China. Why train the LLM to return false info?

Besides, nVidia already excluded China & Russia in their future plans. China's AI development will be very limited.

You do realise that China has been leading this entire AI race the entire time until ChatGPT arrived? They do very good work in China.

And China will be building their own AI chips from now on after being blacklisted by both the USA and EU, so AI development in China will continue.

This whole thing feels like a move from Apple to put pressure on the EU somehow in the negotiations.. I can’t imagine the EU wanting to force Apple to run another AI model locally on their devices- it’s clear that they want to enable 3rd party AI models anyways, so what’s the problem?

They said it will come later, once they “figure out how to make it DMA compatible”, probably some time in 2025, no worries. 🖐️

They better find a way quick!

Else soon enough they will be the only company/phone/OS without a LLM AI assistance, will be found guilty as having a monopoly on NOT having AI (and lack of choices and all that stuff DMA), then fined on worldwide revenue.

(Yes, it’s an exaggeration)

Indeed, all of which could and can still be avoided by making iOS and iPadOS use the same app installation and subscription rules as macOS.

It would be hilarious if China requested Apple to operate as Pear in the Chinese market 😂

Jesus that is seriously creepy… Like reading that made me feel genuine discontent and anguish and I’m not even a citizen of that country, thank God. It’s nothing personal against people of Chinese ethnicity, of course. I’ve been fortunate to know many over my lifetime and find the language, culture and history of that part of the world to be endlessly fascinating and impressive. Which is why it’s such a shame to see their government has devolved into such draconian authoritarianism. Despite our flaws and imperfections - of which we have no short supply (especially in recent years) - reminders like these every so often are good for appreciating the value of being a US citizen.

In the opinion of US Government, which trying to limiting China’s capabilities on AI development, is national security issue.

So, AI as national security issue, government approval to ensure AI model are in compliance with national security standards is necessary.

And you seems forgot about history of US surveillance. Do I need to remind you about Edward Snowden?

Has Tim called his master, Xi Jinping?

That's the only call to make here

As oversea Chinese, I can say Xi is doing very great job as leader.

China has stood its ground well and show its strength to western adversaries. If you are treading China as enemy, then we should too.

Xi has done great job to cramping down corruption, strengthening our military and maintaining economic growth.

An invasion of Taiwan would be like an earthquake for the Chinese economy. The global economy would suffer too, at least for a while, but companies like Apple would eventually adapt as they’re forced to move all production out of China. Now, if China just continues to threaten and nothing else, then it will be business as usual. So if Xi wants to continue doing a “great job”, an invasion of Taiwan will need to be kept off the schedule.

If anything, it is Xi that keeps the war away. It will be earthquake for the economy for sure, but it is far important for unification. It will be short term pain, but for long time, it will be worth.

I would highly hope the unification process starts already. Of course, peaceful unification is preferred, but if not, war is the way to go.

Seeing as Apple’s already been fined more than they make in the EU per year just to Spotify and likely to be fined even more years worth of profits, what’s the incentive for Apple to do anything there anymore if they can’t make a profit in the EU?
And, make no mistake, this IS the point of the regulation, to adversely impact Apple, either by fines or by destroying their business model. They’ve said as much.

The thing is that China is eventually going to roll out an AI that’s basically untethered, it will just be unable to criticize the CCP or Xi Jinping. However, it’s going to do all of the other stuff that caused everyone in the USA to melt down - racism, anti-semitism, calls for genocide, the whole gamut.

The reason is to continue to undermine the USA, which is frankly doing a fine job of itself on the world stage. It’s actually pathetic.

just wondering, if people in China turns on VPN (or similar softwares), they can still use the AI functions on iPhone, right?

Not exactly a hot take. You're probably free to develop your own AI without party approval in China, you just can't sell it to be baked into phones for real people to use. It's basically like getting FCC approval or whatever in the US.
No. AI is treated as a strategic weapon in China whether they admit or not. They know how powerful AI is. The rumour of replacing news reporters with AI says it all. The moment they sense someone developing their own AI I’m confident he/she will be warned or even jailed for doing so. It’s called an oppressive regime for a reason.

Not at all sadly, especially when your iPhone is bought within China. System processes generally don’t follow the typical manner of routing network traffic, and hence why apps on macOS like little snitch had a hard time shutting down macOS telemetry in the past.
