"OS X" on the other hand could allow apple to release OS X as a user installable operating with "OS X certified" components or something along those lines.

Apple does not want to release OS X to run on non-Apple systems. That would be a support nightmare and would negatively impact their own hardware sales. That's exactly why they are going after Psystar and others who are trying it.

Why would it be a support nightmare? We're not using PPCs and the days of 1000 third party chipsets are long since gone. The reason that companies like Psystar are able to operate is because computer hardware has dwindled to a few interconnected families of devices and Apple needs drivers for most of them for their own computers. The Dell Studio Hybrid my parents just bought is almost a 100% match in terms of chips. Beyond that, cases and logos don't require drivers. The largest issue is that OSX doesn't support the 80s dinosaur BIOS and rightly so. Restrict it to new build systems and approved motherboards, Require EFI with BIOS backwards compatibility for windows support, and make AMD send people if they want to be included and there will be no support issues.

I always thought OS X was pronounced OS eX. When ever i've heard someone from Apple call it i'm pretty sure then say Ex and not Ten. So maybe it's you that are wrong......

No, officially it is indeed oh-ess-ten.

If you put on that set of restrictions you will significantly reduce support issues, but I'm sure you will not eliminate them entirely. Any box, even built to spec, may have a quirk or two. But even more than that, you won't stop people from porting and selling the OS on just about any system that will remotely run it, old BIOS or not. And even if you are running on an officially blessed Dell or whatever, just wait until you try to call Apple support with your problem.

That's to be expected, my iMac has had its fair share of quirks. Though a few of them were from Leopard probably being released before it was really ready.

You have that now. I don't think the OSX86 group would grow any larger because there was an official license program. In fact, it would probably shrink, because they would be able to buy the machine they really want with OSX pre-installed.

And even if you are running on an officially blessed Dell or whatever, just wait until you try to call Apple support with your problem.

Why would they be calling Apple? My PC owning family and friends don't call up Redmond when they have a problem. They call Dell, HP, etc. Require their technical support people get certified to the same standards as those at Apple. If there's a question, have them initiate a conference call. For the lone wolves who want to build their own, I think they already understand they're not going to get a whole lot of organized support.

Maybe they'll start referring to it as OS X (pronounced oh • ess • echs) and keep the numbering going past 10. Instead of the correct current (oh • ess • ten) pronunciation.

Because after all, this OS can be easily turned up to 11. ;)

Sorry, but it bugs me so bad when ignorant people call it oh - ess - echs! Makes me wanna smack them lol. Sorry, just a pet peave of mine.

Sorry, you are WRONG! It IS, always HAS BEEN, and always WILL BE oh - ess- ten PERIOD!

Check the past, there you will find your answer to why it is officially NOT OS EX

The previous versions weren't OS Q,R,S,T,U,V, and W

They were System 6, 7, OS 8, OS 9, then

OSX

Its pretty obvious that they do. If they didn't, everyone would have switched to a Mac by now because Apple has the best UI designers.

-Gadgets is almost a copy of Widgets.
-The Vista easy search under the start bar is just like the spotlight. (but much slower)
-Vista's photo browser has a very similar compared to iPhoto.

I know this isn't related to this thread, but it needs to be clear. MSFT takes a lot of Apple's ideas.

You Sir are an iDiot if you ever used Konfabulator (which was released before tiger) you would realise that Apple ripped it off completely, even the f8 activation with a secondary desktop where you could view your widgets.
Konfabulator could not afford to patent it and Apple stole it from under them, they even developed a windows version and discontinued the mac version. Yahoo later bought the company and rebranded it as Yahoo Widgets.

Apple didn't invent search or spotlight, they bought a german company that made spotlight for macs and built it in.

The point is in most thing to do with computers and how we use them, many different people come up with similar ideas because logic dictates how we all use computers. Apple are not the fount of all knowledge they steal as much if not more than everyone else.

It has been my experience that a lot of the time, the hw manufacturer will determine it to be a software issue and tell you to call MS.

If in the past ignorant support personnel have told you phone M$ they were WRONG !
The version of windows that comes with pre-built systems is called an OEM version and it's license states that it is supported by your hardware manufacturer.
Microsoft only has a support line for people who buy full boxed retail versions of Windows.

It's a common quote to hear a mac fanboy yammer on about how opening OS X to pc users would dilute it but it runs very well on X86 and hardware drivers are written by hardware vendors, even most of the ones Apple use themselves. Intel and Nvidia make Apple's PC platforms and they write the driver support too.

I think the whole idea now (obviously) is that Apple built what they call OS X, their platform. From their, it's been ported to the Mac (Mac OS X) and the iPhone (OS X iPhone.) If Apple was to build an entirely new product that needed a new OS, they'd like port it to the device as well and call it "OS X [name here]." That's why I think this attempt to trademark "OS X" is rather significant. Could be an indicator of upcoming products.
OS X Tablet
OS X iMiniTablet
OS X :apple:tv

At some point may be they'll even drop the 10.x thing, and just use the x.
I'm thinking that too.

I don't understand why they call it "OSX iPhone" when it's going to be used for far more than the iPhone itself. Wouldn't "OSX Mobile" be more appropriate?
Interesting. Maybe the iPhone OS will have tweaks for every mobile device that is out or may come out in the future: iPhone, iPod touch, mini-tablet, etc.

Lets face it, if you want an iMac you get a LOT for your money, if you want a Mac Pro, you can start looking at building it yourself.
I think it's the other way around.

OS X or OS Ten, means "us ten" or "the ten of us" in Danish. So they would probably have some trouble clearing it in DK, since its a common phrase...
Or maybe i'm wrong? No idea, just a thought;-)

It so is the other way around. Where did that poster get the idea that you get SO much with an iMac?

I think it's just OSX.

OS8, OS9, OS10 <-- that one not looking so hot. OSX much hotter looking. It's just a roman numeral people.

oh ess echs is the correct pronunciation. Go to WWDC and listen to what the Apple engineers and most OS X developers say.
