If you pre-order, do you have to wait in the same line?

I spoke to someone at the Genius Bar the other day asking some n00b questions about going from my iPhone 3G to the new one and she said that if you preorder it will be shipped right to your house and you won't need to come in to the store. You can set it up right there at home.

I may have misunderstood her, but that was my impression. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

This sounds great, though it would make more sense to release the app today to allow people to use it for pre-ordering as soon as it becomes available tomorrow morning. I've always wondered why Apple didn't have its own mobile site, and now I know.

Apple has had iPhone out for years.
They have never had an iPhone optimized site although they expect others to do so.

Even Microsoft bing.com is optimized to iPhone when you go there.

How is it that Apple gets away with things like this with not a bit of bad press?

I love Apple and (most) of their products, but people need to call it like it is and stop being apologists.

Oh and one more thing.

Anyone think that WWDC was a complete non-event? Was there any kind of surprise? Forget the iPhone gizmodo leak... even if it wasn't leaked, and iPhone 4 was a newly seen device.... was there anything really unexpected or surprising?

All the rumors about cloud services, new super small Apple TV, new iTunes with streaming media, OS 10.7 preview, free MobileMe.... and these from legitimate media reports.... NOTHING comes out.

Really, iPhone 4 is a bit faster, has better camera capabilities.... and looks different. The "retina display" is a non-issue for most people. sounds like Apple got their hands on a good deal on this high end display, and despite the incremental upgrade, decided to focus on that screen for a bulk of the keynote to prove there was something Gizmodo didn't know about, even though it really makes little difference in the usage of the device.

OK enough ranting.

I believe this is correct. If you buy a current iPhone 3GS online from the Apple Store, after you select the phone you want, it prompts you with a few options: start a new contract, start a new family plan, add a new line to an existing plan, or replace an old phone on an existing plan.

If you choose either of the options with an existing AT&T plan, it asks for your wireless number, billing zip, and last 4 digits of your SS#. When the new phone is shipped to your house, your service will be transfered to the new phone the first time you connect it to iTunes, negating the need to go to Apple or AT&T retail.

I'm assuming that the same process will be in place for iPhone 4 pre-orders that are shipped to your house.

As far as I know, there will be a separate setup for those who have preordered. That's how they did it with iPad. But who knows - iPhone is a cheaper device and there may be more initial demand.

I'll be in New York Jun 22-26 and I'm hoping to pick one up at the 5th Avenue store but maybe that's wishful thinking? :apple:

If you have ever seen or experienced the line at the 5th Ave. in NYC, on a non IPhone release, I am sure this is NOT the place you will want to pick up your new IPhone, Trust me... :D

it's a friggin Developer conference!!!

Good Lord! Must there always be some gnome complaining about everything under the sun?

I've always been impressed with Apple retail stores, the staff, and the facilities for sales and service.

I see this as a logical enhancement to their already excellent system.

You are complaining about someone who said "Good lord. What took them so long!" I don't see how that original comment was mere "complaining" per se. Implicitly complaining about how long it took Apple, sure, but it sounds like the comment was more an expression of relief that this implementation finally seems imminent.

I mean, seriously, what DID take them so long?! Browsing the Apple store website on an iPhone/iPod touch has NEVER EVER EVER EVER been an "already excellent system". More like an ironic joke/nightmare. And I think that is the whole point.

That being said, I hope this app (FINALLY!!) will be another of Apple's many "logical enhancements" and an "excellent system" that we come to expect from Apple.

Not that I don't agree, but I think it may be the fact that they push the whole "you can get the 'full' internet" on the iPhone, and it supports all standards, including HTML5, which is what the Apple websites are written in. If they make separate iOS sites for everything, some people may see it as contradictory. Jusy my 2 cents.

Actually, the Apple store website is HTML 4.01. However, your premise is correct. Apple shouldn't be making iOS specific sites - just sites that work on all their web platforms otherwise their claim of supporting the full internet is silly.

There are problems though related to iOS and websites, the main one being that it's impossible to detect :hover events since you can't :hover on a touch based OS which makes navigation trickier. It makes some CSS and javascript effects impossible.

Making an app for the store sends a similar message though - that web based applications are second class.

Why apple.com is iPhone hostile

One of the very few websites NOT to work well on an iPhone is apple.com - making the changes would make Steve Jobs's claim that "you dont need special websites for an iPhone - they all work perfectly" (in original launch) a bit dubious.

Thats why they refuse to make changes! Its a religious thing!

So, now that he has cut off his nose to spite his face, he can now get a new "app" for a nose!

Just FYI, other calls to Apple have gotten a response that the pre-order will start somewhere near 10:00 a.m. PDT. I guess we will just have to wait and see! As far as the Retail Store App is concerned, I would have hoped that Apple might have addressed the issue of free MobileMe first.

sounds like my uncle rob

Good lord! What took them so long?
first day i got my touch, added store/genius et al to home screen...so...it's only a click away...about my pops brother..he has hemorrhoids, sits around his office all day complaining about everything, then goes home and does the same with my aunt, then goes on line and finds things to complain about...in all fairness he's not so tech savvy, even with basics...

Even though I think Apple should have done this a long time ago I am really excited and can't wait for this to launch.

this makes sense, but at the same time there isn't really anything stopping folks from accessing the apple store via safari on the iphone...

I have no problems using apple.com on my phone..The text is a bit small but readable enough to tap zoom what I want. I much prefer sites without any special mobile pages at all. Yahoo (for example) is a mobile disaster you can not escape, even if you tell it you want the desktop version, it switches back whenever you search.

Nothing wrong with creating an app. Speaks more to the limitations of the web than the phone. I would much rather use my banks iPhone App than their web site on a laptop.

I cant help but keep wondering what Cisco thinks about this new iOS branding. Since they have and have had for quite some time an OS for their equipment called IOS.

Edit:
Never mind I see Apple worked out a deal with Cisco ahead of time.
