I'd say with some confidence that people posting on an internet forum aren't the best qualified to determine what a "fair price" for anything would be. See the threads about component costs etc. to get good examples.

If it were up to a lot of people here, companies wouldn't be allowed to make any money at all.

" Why should we let them give us products for free? We are there customers. They could not exist without us!! pay us to get your stuff and we will think about it."

This would be great if true, since I'm switching from a Kindle to an iPad. I was hoping that the book prices for an iPad wouldn't be much more expensive after all this ruckus about this issue just a couple of weeks ago or so. If they'll be at parity with Kindle's prices, so much better! I really look forward to seeing how the technical content will look on iPad. The graphs were usually very, very hard to read on Kindle.

And you'd be wrong, given that material costs are much less than $2 cost of the standard hardback cost. Check with any agent or publisher. The biggest costs are in talent acquisition, marketing and editing---these are labor intensive costs that would be there no matter how the distribution is.

Ok. I get that. But they both (e-book and physical) go through this process... AFTER that they STILL have that (even if it is only) $2 cost where e-books does not.
