A DigiTimes report about growth in smartphone growth for Taiwanese component suppliers is gaining a fair amount of notice this morning for its citation of a market research firm's claims that Apple is set to sell 10 million iPhones this quarter, well ahead of the record 7.4 million units moved last quarter and above most analysts' estimates, which have been falling into the 8-9+ million range.
Taiwan's smartphone IC [integrated circuit] shipments reached 116.97 million units in the third quarter of 2009, up 30.9% sequentially, and market value amounted to US$613.7 million, up 32.0% sequentially, according to Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC). In the third quarter of 2009, sales of the Apple iPhone 3GS far exceeded expectations, and sales are expected to reach 10 million in the fourth quarter of 2009. iPhone chip suppliers have benefited from this development.
Apple has worked to broaden its distribution reach this quarter, making forays into China, South Korea, and several other countries while also adding new carrier partners in such countries as the UK and Canada.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs had announced at the original iPhone's unveiling in January 2007 that the company was aiming to sell 10 million iPhones during 2008, a goal the company reached with several months to go. Continued acceleration to the neighborhood of 10 million iPhones sold in a single quarter demonstrates that Apple's strategy of continued expansion of geographic markets, lowered price points, and hardware and software upgrades has so far been successful.

Just imagine how many if you ended your foolish exclusivity.

Also imagine how well they'd work if it wasn't hogging the resources of one and only one network.

Apple bean-counter dummies. Taking a bulk amount from a total AT&T contract over a lesser amount if shared over Verizon and T-Mobile and Sprint, but more carriers.

edit: Glad to finally see it on Telus. Now that Wind Mobile has started up, maybe you can consider yet another untapped sector.

It's on Bell as well.

I smell another explosion of AAPL immediately following the next earnings report. Just like the last earnings report. And the one before...

Incredible numbers!

Offering it on other networks in some markets has been a boon also as it opens the platform to new customers.

Kudos to Apple. :)

Very happy you have your choice of networks in Canada. But what sort of hogging can possibly be occurring with a population the size of California and (maybe) one percent as many with iPhones?

Also, you may not be aware that Verizon uses a completely different network than AT&T (CDMA as opposed to GSM), which would require Apple to manufacture a completely different, non-world phone.

interesting that you chose not to report that in western europe iphone sales stagnated , 3q09 sales being practically the same as 3q08, and marketshare in smartphones actually decreased. what would you say that demonstrates?

and that is actual piece of research from generally trusted company, and not from generally unreliable digitimes.

I'd put that down to more and more touch-screen iphone/blackberry rivals being produced by competitors. If people want a flashy touch-screen phone there are dozens of alternatives, as appose to the handful or so this time a year ago. People no longer need to go down the smartphone route for a touch phone.

maybe the numbers would be better if we could by the phone also from day one. Paying more than in the states, and getting it later is maybe not that good strategy, ...
I wish Apple would do it like for example italy, and sell directly online, then at least it's available immediately, and no 3rd party in between that wanna earn on that deal too, ...

That would only make the numbers better overall. Comparing growth in the same market is still a good indicator of the success of the iPhone over there and his numbers show that in Europe, the iPhone isn't such a big hit. World wide, it is 3rd in market share behind Nokia, and Nokia is very big in Europe.

10 million? It's possible I suppose.

Looking at the 3G, sales dropped from 7 million to about 4.5 million from launch to the festive quarter so it's a big jump. That said, the 3GS is on sale in China and South Korea amongst other places now and there's more carrier availability so you never know.

Absolutely AMAZING numbers for Apple again...with anticipated record sales of Macs (especially the new iMacs) and iPhones, the company is set to break yet another record in its long history of industry-beating numbers...thank you for another spectacular year, SJ!

And there are still people buying Windows PCs...how come?

MS IS DEAD. DELL IS DEAD.
