Apple's status page shows an ongoing issue with "iCloud Account and Sign In" since early Christmas morning.

The issue seems likely to be related to activation issues users having been experiencing on our forums. Most notably are a number of users complaining that their new Apple Watch is failing verification upon setup. Users have been reporting this issue in our forums. BeatCrazy writes:
I realize it's Christmas morning and Apple's activation servers are probably on overload, but this still seems unnecessarily frustrating.
I got my two kids (<18 yo) Apple Watch SE + Cellular, with plans to activate via Family Setup/sharing. They each already have Apple IDs that are used on iPads regularly.
I'm able to start the pairing process using my iPhone, sign into their Apple IDs with their passwords, but I keep getting hung when Apple wants me to enter the passcode of another device. I'm given options like their iPad passcodes, or one of my Macs. After entering any of these, the watch spins for about 2 minutes and I get the error "Verification Failed - There was an error verifying the passcode of your (or insert family member name here) iPhone (or insert iPad/Mac)." Apple gives me a choice to "reset encrypted data", which I take as an offer to destroy all their existing Apple ID passwords and data - not a good option IMO.
A number of users have responded with similar issues in that thread. Meanwhile, another user reports having trouble with HomePod setup today.
It has been getting stuck in “configuration” even after multiple resets. I have tried removing it from my iCloud account and even signed out of iCloud on the iPhone I was using to set it up. I have tried at least a dozen times and it will not configure, it just gets stuck. I just love spending my Christmas Holiday messing around with electronics that don’t work as expected. Any advice?
Similarly, it seems likely related to a high load of traffic from new Apple users logging into Apple's verification servers for the first time.

At this point, it seems the best advice would be to wait until later to try again as the traffic dies down.

I contacted apple this afternoon after the issue with setting up my new M1 Macbook Pro where it was failing at the 'Enter passcode from iphone' section'. They said this is due to the traffic they are experiencing with new devices connecting to the server. They advised to try again later.

You can check the status by visiting... https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

Our two Apple Watches (SS 5) couldn't be set up for a long time this morning. It was very, very frustrating. For each Watch we tried over a dozen times before the setup process finally started.

And then once we got started, the install process failed at least once on each Watch. But eventually we were successful by mid afternoon (ET).

iCloud seems to be acting up bad! None of my safari tabs through iCloud is working.

Macrumors please reach out to Apple and notify them about iCloud not working properly.

Folks. With HomePod mini being stuck on configure.
Reset network settings on iPhone and start over with the Mini. Should work.
Worked for me.

I was setting up a Mac and iCloud wouldn’t activate Keychain. System status shows “iCloud Account & Sign In” has been an issue since 4:45am. Really poor timing Apple ...

Got my son’s HomePod mini to set up rather quickly with my iPad, when I used my iPhone I couldn’t get it to get pass configuring to save my life. I tried resetting, removing from my iCloud and all kinds of other things.

Was having the same issues with my new HomePod mini today. I managed to get it set up, but it was 'configuring' endlessly. I'll admit I was disappointed with it, however, in the end I restored the software/firmware by plugging the HomePod into my MacBook, and it worked just fine afterwards. Drastic action, and probably not necessary, but I thought I was the only one with the issue at that point & I'd tried nearly everything else and nothing worked except that.

Days like today really make you think about these devices and their over-reliance on cloud services to operate...

The HomePod mini is up and singing now though, and I'm really happy with the sound quality for such a small device.

HomePod Mini stuck on Configuration. Disconnected from Family Sharing since My wife's account pays but am setting up the HPM on my account. I was able to hard reset the unit start configuration which quickly allowed me to download and update Home App from 14.1 to 14.3. My wife sent me a new invitation and we are good to go. Or maybe the %#&er just decided to configure up on its own.

Same issues. Being asked to update my Apple ID on my iPhone but it fails every time I type in my password. And my new HomePod Mini I got for Christmas is stuck on "configuring." Disappointing on Christmas, but I'll wait for the fix. It's a minor enough of an issue that I hope they aren't calling people in to fix it till tomorrow.

Geez Louise, some people whine about anything, no mater the cause. when I see problems/issues on system status I just jump right to the conclusion that there are issues. Last time it was an Amazon infrastructure problem (yah, lots of work on the cloud done by amazon, go figure), but it could be anything. but outage.s happen
