And here's you, whining about... huh. Whining about the fact that people are complaining. The difference being that the people complaining about an inability to set up their devices actually spent a nonzero amount of time trying to get their devices set up. The process failed, and there's only the speculation that it's an outage. In my own case, my several attempts took about an hour and a half of time in all, at the end of which my dad didn't have a functional gift. It wasn't the end of the world for either of us, but only an ass would wave it airily aside. You, on the other hand, have suffered exactly zero inconvenience, other than the time you spent voluntarily reading about other people's misfortunes, and the nonexistent amount of time you lost empathizing. You're just whining for no reason at all. Do remember to see the self-accusatory nature of your own post.
You don’t need iCloud for a device to be functional. If it’s not working set it up later but the device will still work.

Put everything in the cloud, they said... It will be easier, they said...

It's great, until it isn't. The IOT troubles me enormously, I feel like a lot of my products are rented as as soon as a company decides to no longer support devices (e.g. Hue Hub v1) or move the goal posts (e.g. ITTT) then suddenly, it isn't all fun and wonderful.

I'd much rather be able to host my own services, locally. Say, via a Raspberry Pi.

You do realize that iCloud is hosted on AWS servers? So before you crucify Apple maybe Amazon is the one you should be upset at.
iCloud is hosted at a mix of multiple providers (and Apple isn't building its own data centers for nothing), but even if it weren't, this problem is entirely on Apple. At the end of the day, they didn't rent enough capacity, whether from Amazon, Google, Azure, or by building more capacity themselves.

Right now there is a pandemic and there was a bombing today in Nashville and millions of people are unemployed and about to be evicted and will have no unemployment benefits coming in and you have the audacity to complain about iCloud?

Ah yes. Also, children are starving in Africa.

Must be nice to have that as your only issue while our country is about to go beyond the pale.

People can have multiple issues and still be unhappy with a comparatively small one. Gifting your loved one something and finding it doesn't work puts quite a dent on Christmas mood.

STill a Hell of a lot better than ‘MobileMe’ ever was
You're correct, though MobileMe was the start of of iCloud, things are never really great at the beginning, I kind of liked MM, because of the novelty of it. No doubt it was a cluster F*ck mostly, but it was new and did develop into something pretty good.

HomePod mini stuck on configuring. Apple get it together.
Me too. Two kids with shiny new home pod minis stuck in configuring. I spent hours trying to fix it and reading other threads. I also had the verification issue. Sooo frustrating

I never keep anything in the cloud. they are not your servers that your information is being stored. They are Apples. Just like I lost access to my huge iTunes Library because my past Macs never got iTunes deauthorized.

So YOUR access to these SERVER FARMS or CLOUD that they like to call it can be revoked at any time.

With all the snooping going on of the NSA. My stuff stays on my LOCAL Hard Drives.

Worried about losing something? BACKUP SOFTWARE. and backup often. DAILY.

I was able to finish the HomePod mini setup on the iPad in the home app by going to the HomePod settings and doing the 14.3 software update.
I can’t get the minis to even show up on the home app, so I can’t force a software update...

I'm glad I found this article so I can step away from this HomePod Mini stuck on configuring. I was able to update it to 14.3 by plugging it into my MacBook...who knew the USB-C gives you that option? Shows up in the finder...but even with the update and a reset after that...still "configuring" and none of the advanced features are available. So, Imma just going to walk away and try again sometime in the next few days. I guess the question is, does "trying again" mean another reset?
Reset Network settings on my iPhone resolved mine.. I did everything else (several times). I think something is getting hosed when the iPhone transfers network configuration information.

I spoke to Apple Support about it because two new HomePod Minis were stuck Configuring, and an original HomePod that I reset yesterday due to wifi connectivity issues in the last few weeks, was doing the same.

They talked me through various things to try, and the first thing was to turn off Smart Connect on my Synology router (RT2600ac with two additional mesh points), then reset the HomePods and set up again - this time it worked fine and the Configuring message only lasted for about 5 minutes before completing. I was then able to update both of the HomePod minis from 14.1 to 14.3.

The System Status page is still showing issues more than 24 hours later. Maybe I’ll delay (the Apple portion of) Christmas one more day ...

Thanks for the heads up.

Got a pair of HomePod Minis coming today, and I now know to be prepared for issues after a pair of iPad Airs both went through and got configured from the old units yesterday with no pressing issue, though.

Oh, and don't forget that there seems to have been a need by people to install a lot of iOS updates yesterday before they could activate and transfer configurations from and old iPad to a new one, yesterday. Especially if they hadn't been keeping up with iOS releases for the recent past.

I'm perfectly happy to buy Apple gear because the setup goes great when doing things like transferring personal effects from an old iPad to a new one, or even doing a cloud-recover of a 'confused' iMac.

I pay more for the Apple, and I expect that extra cost to be backed up by better service.

There is all the more reason Apple should run smoothly as some people in financial straits took a bigger hit buying perhaps needed electronics from Apple because of their reliability, and those people shouldn't have to sit there with bricked equipment.

I'm the OP from yesterday.

This is now resolved for me. I was able to activate and set up both kids' Apple Watch SE.

Walkie-talkie invite doesn't work (either direction), but I don't think that is related.

Unless you keep 100% of your money under your mattress, it's also "in the cloud" :)

My HomePods are stuck on configuring but they're working. Other than their names not updating across my devices, I'm not sure what's not working yet. Has anyone found a fix?
