Apple today published its 2023 Environmental Progress Report, setting out the company's ongoing efforts to combat climate change and reduce its impact on the environment ahead of Earth Day on April 22.

The report explores Apple's chemical research, recycling and device recovery operations, energy efficiency improvements and use of renewable energy, reduction of waste, support of community action, and more as part of its ongoing goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. It also draws attention to Apple's recent announcement that it plans to accelerate the transition to recycled materials across its devices.

In addition, Apple highlighted its individual Product Environmental Reports, which break down the environmental impact of any current Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, Mac, external display, Apple TV, or HomePod with regards to source materials, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, use, and recovery. Apple vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives Lisa Jackson said:

This year, we've also made it easier to understand the carbon impact of your Apple devices, and the extraordinary steps we’re taking to reduce their emissions. In our Product Environment Reports, you can learn about recycled gold in your iPhone, the energy demands of your iPad, and the packaging around your Mac. We're transforming so many aspects of the way we make our technology, and with our Product Environment Reports, you'll see where we've made progress and where the hard work remains.

How about letting us replace batteries on our own or swap out displays or back panels? There is no reason those can't be done by users. Too much money being made by charging people stupid money for a new battery that need special tools or forcing people to buy a whole new phone just because it makes more sense than replacing the screen.

While they are making some good changes for the environment they aren't fooling me.

100% agree. All these claims are simply "pat yourself on the back" marketing wank.

They produce high quality, but non repairable and non upgradeable devices, and the company is completely against 3rd party repair industry that actually REPAIRS rather than replaces entire components or devices.

The "self repair kits" a joke, and only cover a handful of devices.

the non-Pro 14 models have a removable back panel, with iFixit calling it "the most repairable model in years"…

show me another company as massive as Apple that's taking the amount of initiative that they are, please

Lol, gotta love you macrumors users “mAkE a MoDuLaR iPhOnE” then when they do “it’s clunky, too expensive and Dell makes a thinner one with faster parts” 🤣
you haven't seen the framework laptop yet. on an unrelated note, why is apple getting rid of the adapter but not the stickers?

I won't use terms like green washing but honestly i dont believe apple truly gives a **** about ecology .

And I am still shocked they dared say the charger removal was due to ecology concerns, with a straight face and a big smile

Before you stand in protest, maybe get the terminology right? Who ever used the word "ecology" with this topic?

I applaud Apple for removing unnecessary chargers. They are absolutely right that it helps to reduce waste. Chargers are SOOOOO easy to come by these days, it's pointless that every new device comes with its own.

I'm not a native :)

And ok

there was some stossel report yesterday that claims apple just green washes stuff. they push emission check marks through lobbyists and pass the buck to someone else. Apple is just all sunshine and rainbows marketing now. they do nothing interesting anymore other than make all their product unserviceable, non-upgradeable and more expensive year over year. The train will come to an end inevitably. I wish they were the 2000's era apple again. quarterly new ideas, constantly revising and introducing new software, new hardware... getting people excited to use computers to do new things. now it is all about getting people to buy apps and cloud services then lock them into the eco system so they can never leave.

Remove the charging cable from the iPhone box and tell us you’re saving the climate what does a charger have to do with Mother Nature
I mean, absolutely undeniable that a good part of the reason they did that was for money, but it’s also undeniable that the box *did* shrink by a good bit and the amount of people reusing their old bricks did go up.
Pretending that it was all done for the environment is ridiculous, but also pretending that it doesn’t help even by the slightest amount is equally ridiculous.
I think people are just going to have to get used to the fact that sometimes, things can be good both for companies, and for the environment, and it’s not always one or the other.
Also, sometimes it requires compromise, like, oh, I don’t know, getting rid of the bricks that were included with *checks notes* 16 generations of iPhone, and pretty much every android phone sold between 2008 and 2019.
I’ve got probably dozens of the little 5W chargers and those still work, any Mac or iPad can be used to charge an iPhone, the 20 W brick isn’t hard to find… there’s no shortage of chargers about.
