If you mean the Ultra, well, yes, because all Ultras have cellular connectivity hardware. But that is not the case in non-Ultra watches. In those, you can use emergency services without your iPhone nearby only with those including cellular connectivity hardware.
I’ll correct it, thanks for the input. I was simply assuming that I was referring to emergency SOS in the cellular Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra, which comes with it already.

To be honest, it would make no sense to sell an outdoorsy, rugged, and tactical Apple Watch Ultra without cellular because many of you would be off the grid with it. That’s why  sells it with the utmost water and dust resistance, a loud speaker for the siren, and top notch cellular connectivity and compass. 🧭 even the bands have to be really strong and secure for these types of people who like to do these activities.

What an amazing recuse. I'm amazed he got cellular service so far out, that's superb.
Telstra's network (the largest in Australia) can typically extend 20 to 70 km according to their website but on an apple watch he's very lucky. I've had an ultra lose signal in a pool on one end because water kills the signal.

It's designed for boats with external antennas but it's not recommended to be the primary form of commutation out there

I guess that makes sense with it being so flat and no trees/buildings. Thanks!

(this makes me want to upgrade to AW cellular, but I’ve always been wary of having a cellular signal basically strapped to my skin 24/7).

The cellular watch only switches to cellular signal when it loses connection with your phone...this saves watch battery life and prevents unnecessary power use. The watch uses bluetooth, wifi and cellular last (in that order)

Such an awesome story! Let’s see more ads like this.

One other thought is that most people prob don’t have the cellular version and thus they can’t use the SOS feature (this makes me want to upgrade to AW cellular, but I’ve always been wary of having a cellular signal basically strapped to my skin 24/7).
My understanding is the cellular radio is only activated when you are out of range of your iPhone and WiFi.

Edit: I see I am not the first one to make this comment. 😁

Apple need a good news story! PR must've been working overtime to find (or fabricate) this!
It was all in the news last year when it happened.

I think the ad was produced & released now, so its making news again, but it was reported by multiple sources last July when it happened (some reports didn't even mention apple...just referred to a smart watch, and then focused on the dangers on the ocean)

That's great, no one can ever hear me when I am on my Apple Watch Ultra. I would drown before 911 could understand me.

My understanding is that the signal is capable of being received over very large distance (has something to do with the cellular network wave length I believe) but in cities or on land that will get broken up by buildings, mountains etc. ect. While in open water there is nothing to disturb the signal and it can travel much further than expected.

Something similar goes in with your WiFi as well by the way. Signal might be shiiiiit due to walls n stuff burning you put a router in a open field it can be received unexpectedly far.

Besides dos the ultra not have some sort of emergency satellite tap in or is that only a rumor that has not yet made it to the model sold?

This kind of stuff is why I care about what Apple does over everyone else including AI. Privacy and life saving features that are proven to work.
