Apple today published its latest iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 adoption statistics, as measured by devices that transacted on the App Store on May 30. The numbers come just days ahead of WWDC, where Apple is expected to announce iOS 17.

Most importantly, Apple says 81% of all active iPhones are now running iOS 16, up from 72% in February. 13% of active iPhones are still running iOS 15, and 6% are running an even older iOS version, according to the data. iOS 16 was released to the public in September and is compatible with the iPhone 8 and newer.

Apple adds that 71% of all active iPads are now running iPadOS 16, up from 50% in February.

Around the same time last year, Apple revealed that 82% of all active iPhones were running iOS 15, so the usage statistics are very similar on a year-over-year basis. iOS 16 adoption will start to decline next week after Apple makes the first beta of iOS 17 available to members of its $99-per-year Developer Program for testing.

Anyone out there still on iOS 15 and did not bother upgrading to iOS 16?
I would have remained on ios 15 until Apple locked their updates to only devices that couldn't update to iOS 16, so a forced update to 16 or risk my device. (Edit: Well I can but I have to go through many hoops to just download a security patch, not worth it to me.)

Again proves why Apple is best at Software updates. very surprising that iOS 16 had more users than iOS 15 because 16 ended support for 6s, SE, 7, and Touch 7.
Ooof It pains me to look at this

Although, this is total usage (not just those who updated from S)

And apple only offers premium phones at a premium phone, whilst android has cheap options , which obviously don't get many OS updates . Fair enough for a phone you paid 3* less i suppose

Besides, core apps still get updated on older android versions, which isn't the case with iOS , where messages, plans, notes, safari even ! Are tied to the OS
So people may not feel the need to update ? Just a guess

Wanted to add something else but i forgot , jeez my memory sucks

I'm in the 13%. Only running iOS 15 cuz the 6S is too old. But will likely be running iOS 17 in October.

Dunno why 10% of people aren't running iOS 16 that can. Seems a no brainer this late in the year when all the v16.0 bugs should have been ironed out. 🤷‍♂️

I have one app my family uses on their iPads that’s abandonware at this point and crashes shortly after it launches. It ran fine under iPadOS 15 but not 16. There’s another vendor that has a similar app now but I can’t convince the others to switch and I guess this gives me an excuse to keep another iPad for myself 😊

Especially considering the security updates they won't be getting. I guess some people enjoy living dangerously.

What is the statistics of devices still active running iOS 12?
It would be nice if they allowed third-party browser is not using web kit for older iOS versions that way we can get the latest CCS and TLS.

I ran into a customer the other day that was still using an iPhone 5S with Verizon, apparently it's still works under their network and they were using tap pay.

Was using my iPhone 4S today on iOS 8.4.1 and something got fixed and I'm able to use the iCloud again for photo sharing and Pages documents, the only thing that stopped working was the backups, I went into settings and they turned it off, I turned it back on and it said there was no backups so it looks like they purged the old back ups.

They really need iOS 17 to be the savior or “snow leopard” of iOS 16. I remember when iOS 12 beta 1 was released and it was more stable than the final iOS 11 release!

Isn't this something they normally show off at WWDC Keynote? I'm sure I remember it was in previous years, this coupled with Final Cut and Logic on iPad OS is making me think they really are struggling for time on Monday.

another reason why developing for iOS is more appealing.

apple deserves the 30% cut. sideloading is stupid.

There was a security update for iOS15 15.7.1 if I recall, released a few days ago... they re still coming.

Presuming there's a fair number of older devices out there that can't get iOS16 however.

You’re right about the OS segmentation with Android. But it’s not an apples to apples comparison considering Android has the system apps decoupled from the main OS. You don’t have to download an “OS update” just to get new features in the Mail app or Messages app.

I'm most shocked people are still using software as old as Oreo in any way. That came out in 2017. And KitKat seems eternal, as that was released 10 years ago back in 2013. I still remember when that was the newest Android OS.

I miss Apple's hilarious jabs at Android and all on stage in the Jobs era / early Cook era. Competition is amazing.
