My HomePod review:

It is always exciting to try a new speaker system.

So much of what we do today is visual.

Unpacking it is easy if you find the easy open tabs.

The HomePod is an IOS device primarily. There is a Home App that I had never used and it lives there.

I first got an error message 6722. I called Apple support, he told me he'd heard that several times today and my iPad did not have the iCloud set up so I gave the iPad my Apple ID and then the HomePod worked.

From the iMac it works through Air Play.

I was glad to have the Apple Support person and he showed me tricks with:

Settings Music

Settings Name (for iCloud, Apple ID)

Home App for custom settings

Anyway, it worked.

Clear sound.

I don't find treble and bass dials or controls, there are music settings but I heard no difference with the different ones.

I had a stereo HK $ 250 system for 30 years and 2 days before the HomePod came it flipped out. So that worked out.

It sounds good, its got a good presence. The HK system had more backbone, but the two tweeters and the bass box would weigh 4-6 times the HomePod 5 or 7 pound weight.

I can see that if they offer a second one as a stereo system it would sound super great. I do miss the stereo sound. But I wonder.

It would be money too.

I wonder if they came up with a buddy stereo companion box without all the sophistication if they could price it lower as a companion

The system does have maturing to go through, for example the keyboard volume on the iMac does not work. It works for the internal iMac speakers only. But it used to with the external speaker connection. On the iPad the volume is with the slider for iTunes. On the iMac the volume is with the slider on the upper left.

If I were Tim Cook I'd have offered a stereo system from the start, I can see some people missing stereo.

No question it is a clear sounding unit. And it does have some magical 3D sound effect.

Siri sounds so clear, as if there was a person right next to you it is very pleasant an it offers like a friend's company.

As a 1 unit system I'll give it 4 stars. As a stereo setup a 5. But I don't wanna pay for two units. I want a mini buddy unit controlled by the main unit.

Also, if I were Steve Jobs I'd change the "fat soft look" of the HomePod for a sleek aluminum angular Apple like unit with sound grill. Like a Lexus front.

Just now listening to music and I realized how high quality the sound is in its purity. It really is very clear.

Loving my HomePod. But it did get me thinking: wouldn’t it be good if Home let you automate HomePod? It appears as a HomeKit device, but you can’t control it at all. I’m thinking something like “create a scene for good morning” so you say “hey Siri, good morning” and the scene:
  • Says “good morning”
  • Tell me local temperature
  • Tell me any accidents on my morning commute; especially that would affect meetings/appointments at first of the day. Suggest alternative route that is saved in Maps for the first appointment or work arrival whichever is first.
  • Reads the latest news
  • After news, plays my morning mix, or some internet radio station
And if you had other devices you could open the blinds, or turn on lights etc.

Reading your post normally would tickle the part of my brain that loves technology. I’ve added other suggestions in bold and few their order should be first as it’ll affect the time you may have left to get up eat, brush teeth shower and get ready to head out. Oh maybe transfer the update to iPhone with CarPlay or iPhone with public transit commute.

Funny enough the part of my soul was tickled. I want to get up and say good morning to a spouse then other family first not my AI. Sad times that the AI gets priority first in our day.

LOL! Well, I had assumed that I had already said good morning to my wife, given she was next to me when I woke up. And I have no other family. And then I got up, and peed perhaps. And then said "Hey Siri, good morning", while I made breakfast. :p

I absolutely love my Homepod. Using Siri to do the basics is a breeze, but I don't need her to give me the quadratic formula... unlike most people.

i dont need a quadratic formula, but i do need 'play sirius xm' and 'play spotify' and 'play iheart radio'

it is VERY STUPID of apple to have every device use the same wakeup command, if you were to say hey siri play music, not only does the homepod play your iphone plays your mac plays your ipad plays all different songs, why wouldnt you do hey homepod or hey iphone or hey mac?

If I'm not mistaken you have the same issue with a Google Phone and a Google Home or any other Google device that uses OK Google. It is not confined to just Apple.

Honestly I have not had any issue with my HP picking up before my other devices.

No, it doesn't.

Mac needs a key press
ATV needs the button press
Watch needs a wake up via wrist flick
I do have hey siri turned off on the iphone though.
I am sitting here with an iphone, watch, mac and the Homepod responds, nothing else.

If i hold the ATV siri button it responds, the homepod does not. Etc.

I am probably behind the curve on this one, but can HomePod be used as a speaker for the TV? Currently my TV, PlayStation deliver sound output to the home theater system. Can I replace the home theater and use a HomePod or two?

Yes, you can easily use the speaker with AppleTV by selecting it for sound output. Sounds great. If you have other sources, though it won't work as speaker for your DVD player or other devices....just iPhone and AppleTV.

I was surprised today when I asked a question that i had no idea if it would be answered—out of curiosity. I asked where Shape of Water was playing and she gave me 3 theaters, said one far gave me times, etc. that surprised me. I use Siri in Car play and sometimes use it on phone (rarely on iPad Pro since it has to be power connected). I’d like calendar and reminders (the reminder I set alerted me on Watch) announced in some way, the one timer works okay—the chimes alerted me— beyond that its fine. I only have 2 smart plugs and they aren’t included in Home app but i have them set by Rules anyhow. Don’t expect to add any more smart home things.
