My HomePod review:
It is always exciting to try a new speaker system.
So much of what we do today is visual.
Unpacking it is easy if you find the easy open tabs.
The HomePod is an IOS device primarily. There is a Home App that I had never used and it lives there.
I first got an error message 6722. I called Apple support, he told me he'd heard that several times today and my iPad did not have the iCloud set up so I gave the iPad my Apple ID and then the HomePod worked.
From the iMac it works through Air Play.
I was glad to have the Apple Support person and he showed me tricks with:
Settings Music
Settings Name (for iCloud, Apple ID)
Home App for custom settings
Anyway, it worked.
Clear sound.
I don't find treble and bass dials or controls, there are music settings but I heard no difference with the different ones.
I had a stereo HK $ 250 system for 30 years and 2 days before the HomePod came it flipped out. So that worked out.
It sounds good, its got a good presence. The HK system had more backbone, but the two tweeters and the bass box would weigh 4-6 times the HomePod 5 or 7 pound weight.
I can see that if they offer a second one as a stereo system it would sound super great. I do miss the stereo sound. But I wonder.
It would be money too.
I wonder if they came up with a buddy stereo companion box without all the sophistication if they could price it lower as a companion
The system does have maturing to go through, for example the keyboard volume on the iMac does not work. It works for the internal iMac speakers only. But it used to with the external speaker connection. On the iPad the volume is with the slider for iTunes. On the iMac the volume is with the slider on the upper left.
If I were Tim Cook I'd have offered a stereo system from the start, I can see some people missing stereo.
No question it is a clear sounding unit. And it does have some magical 3D sound effect.
Siri sounds so clear, as if there was a person right next to you it is very pleasant an it offers like a friend's company.
As a 1 unit system I'll give it 4 stars. As a stereo setup a 5. But I don't wanna pay for two units. I want a mini buddy unit controlled by the main unit.
Also, if I were Steve Jobs I'd change the "fat soft look" of the HomePod for a sleek aluminum angular Apple like unit with sound grill. Like a Lexus front.
Just now listening to music and I realized how high quality the sound is in its purity. It really is very clear.
