Apple today shared a new short film in its ongoing Shot on iPhone series, this time using the latest iPhone 16 Pro model for filming purposes. The video, called "Big Man," stars British rapper Michael "Stormzy" Omari.

The mini movie features Stormzy as Tenzman, a washed-up, world-weary musician who runs into two joyful kids. The three embark on a journey that ultimately inspires Tenzman to make new music. The film was directed by Aneil Karia, known for Surge and The Long Goodbye.

An iPhone 16 Pro site accompanying the film highlights features like Camera Control, the option to shoot in 4K at 120 frames per second, playback speed adjustments, Audio Mix, and more.

I mean, here’s the thing - the iPhone can totally handle cinematography. (Then again all the gear needed… lights, rigs, all that stuff and a production staff).. Still, I love that it’s making filmmaking way more accessible. A couple years ago you’d need a $50-100k camera (Arri, RED etc) just to shoot anything decent. Now the tech’s finally getting out of the way and enabling creators. AI tech like VEO 3 will fill in the gaps for SFX.

It's both exciting and daunting for filmmakers these days I bet....

Seems close to perfect. The night scenes are still a little mushy though. I suppose they used ProRes and graded the footage. It would be interesting to see how close to this it would be if they used HEVC. The lack of compression artifacts is very impressive.

I mean… it looks like iPhone footage. Not bad, not mind-blowing. Back in the days people would shoot similar quality with camcorders, now camcorders are in their pockets. It is normal. Can’t say video quality differs much from iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15. There is not much room for growth either. But I like that it was literally shot on iPhone and only regular camera app was used, not even Final Cut Camera, so that video has default white balance which is always on the warmer side when indoors

Ungraded .mov straight from camera app. Had some opportunity to shoot with 16 Pro recently, it produces same footage stock. They might have used gimbals tho, but the built-in stabilization is fairly good to avoid gimbals as well

Image clarity is still a bit mushy. Even shots with enough light, but faster movement. Good for the phone, but not great. Certainly not good as 4k, decent for HD content.

Did not watch the 20 minute video. But iPhone cameras are good and can take very good photos and videos. Looking forward to the improvements the camera will get later this year with the new iPhones.

It doesn’t matter whether it was shot on iPhone or an IMAX camera, if the movie itself is creatively bankrupt then the format isn’t going to save it.

Also worth pointing out that the rig required to make any ‘Shot on iPhone’ campaign movie is worth… well, a lot.

I love the way you put that.

But it's cool know it can.
Some people can’t understand how impressive it is that we literally carry a device that you can use to make a movie in your POCKET. That’s wild. They’d rather be snarky, unhappy, and find anything to complain about
